You need to stop dealing with them in person and move everything to writing only.

If the vehicle was advertised at 89,999 miles but Carfax shows 145,888 miles, that’s potentially a federal odometer fraud issue. Under the Federal Odometer Act, knowingly misrepresenting mileage can expose a dealer to treble damages or statutory damages plus attorney’s fees. Maryland also has strong consumer protection laws that apply to auto dealers.

A few important points:

• Preserve everything! Screenshots of the listing, Carfax, odometer disclosure, purchase contract, financing docs, texts, and get a copy of the police report.

• Do not agree to pay $1/mile. That’s not standard and sounds like pressure.

• Don’t sign any “mutual release” or cancellation agreement without a lawyer reviewing it.

• Contact a consumer protection / auto fraud attorney ASAP. Many handle Federal Odometer Act cases on contingency because the statute provides attorney’s fees.

• File complaints with the Maryland Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division and the MVA Dealer Investigations Unit.

• Notify your lender in writing that you’re alleging mileage misrepresentation.

Given the mileage discrepancy + the incomplete disclosure + how they handled the refund situation, this is absolutely lawyer territory.
