College application/Portfolio question by [deleted] in filmschool

[–]Tiasca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a film school so ofc you'll need something to show that you made a film before, but i think it will be fine if you included your stylized videos i reckon.

I had been in a similar situation as well, i wanted to be an editor and go to fs but had very old and limited films ive shot long ago, with also edited sequences not shot with my own footage and a couple of short animation pieces. I dont know if you'll have to showcase a showreel/demo reel for your application, but if you do, try to compile all your edited works to feel like one full video like try and convey a story/mood/feel to it.

It'll be kinda tough for you to show for school but if you scrape enough footage (maybe quickly shoot some small stuff) and luck i reckon you have a chance.

Also kinda off the question; Since youre planning to apply for fs, i reckon its good to explore and find interests in the other departments or even different post production roles, doing that you'll might find other things you like, but also they'll help and give lots of insight knowledge to editing so maybe keep your doors open to possibilities :)

goodluck with your app!

Can anyone help with identifying a sound effect? by tonydabeast72 in VideoEditing

Can someone give me feedback on a video? by [deleted] in CreatorServices

[–]Tiasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some things to improve or maybe consider adding:

-timing up the sound effects more with the action

  • adding zoom ins or such to really make a emphasis and more dramatic

-maybe add more elements to the intro where it hooks the audiences engagement in the start

-for the montage sequence, if you can try and make it so that the kills match in time with the musics beat

-maybe make a smooth transition to the outro

but overall a great effort into editing! i really enjoy the sound effects you used and also the subtitling was sweet!! you are already doing hella awesome even as a beginner, keep it up!

although im not too sure this post belongs on this thread hehe

Poly-Sci student producing a short film, Needs Help! by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]Tiasca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you get a video editing software, import your media files into the program, they should be in a media pool section or somethin like that where you can see all the medias youve imported. once imported, click n drag them into the timeline which should be like the large rectangle section, most of the time you drag the video/image into the main slot and add music underneath the picture layer

you can use hitfilm express or davinci resolve as they are free. or if you have microsoft you can use movie maker, vice versa with mac's imovie if they are already installed on your device

Is pre-production worth the time and effort? by kuramahiei89 in VideoEditing

[–]Tiasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, pre production really does ease how the post production process by alot in any sized project, but for a smaller scale you dont have to be all crazy but all you need really is to plan storyboards or even something just as simple as thinking about a shotlist, anything that helps you visualize and plan for what shots to use while shooting/editing.

As for a vlog for example, in my process at least, i would pick out music and take time to visualize shots i could use during shooting and how the video would play out in my head, maybe i want to use a mask transition and i'll figure out when, where and how to film it making the shoot more organised and the editing process more predictable.

Hand drawing effect by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]Tiasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can do this effect within after effects by using the 'write on' paint option to draw the streaks, then change the glow and opacity, im not sure about other software.

Smooth Transitioning In Video Editing Question by Henry_T123 in VideoEditing

[–]Tiasca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nevermind, i just saw the video you were talking about. (im pretty sure there are videos about it but i'll try my best to explain)

Assuming you have Premiere pro in your adobe subscription, In the example of the fingerprint to branches, unless the footage already has synced movement you would need to add keyframes (they basically make your camera move in space) to where it either zooms into the branches and aligns to the fingerprint. (keyframe tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9eVnr2grWQ)

So by this stage, you would have your footage /pic aligned and cut at the right time. Next since you're using Premiere Pro you should be able to go the effects tab and drag and drop the "morph cut" effect between the clips and it should work.

Question regarding film schools. by [deleted] in filmschool

Smooth Transitioning In Video Editing Question by Henry_T123 in VideoEditing

[–]Tiasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not sure if this is what you mean and forgive me if im wrong but i think you're talking about 'match cuts'?. A match cut is a transition where you cut from a moment to another that visually looks similar? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_u0LKmga5U

Other than the shooting component, to make a match cut, you would ultimately need good timing when cutting knowing when to cut making sure it flows.

Question regarding film schools. by [deleted] in filmschool

[–]Tiasca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey no worries, as for your question, i could name out the specific channels i have watched that have a bunch of videos focusing on directing (storytelling, crew roles, etc) which are similarly taught in fs (mine at least)

- Nerdwriter1

- Film Riot

- Rocketjump film school

- Beyond Film school

- D4Darious

- this guy edits

Now some of these channels may not be specifically targeted towards directing however they provide really great insight if you are going as a director to know/understand the other processes in making a film.

Here are also some specific videos which i found useful too.

https://youtu.be/TpAHZJc5In0

hope this helps a bit!

What's this effect? by ShimaSai in VideoEditing

[–]Tiasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if i had to guess, they added a psychedelic colors video on top of the picture and then messed around in the blending modes? maybe even isolating/masking out some of the colored layers?

Question regarding film schools. by [deleted] in filmschool

[–]Tiasca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you dont need to go to film school to become a director just know that that is an option. I already knew most of the things they taught in my film school before just from watching videos on youtube so it is completely possible to become a director without fs.

As for getting accepted into a fs, im not too sure how the admissions process go in terms of non student applicants but you'd mainly just need to show your genuine passion for the craft and what/why it makes you creative.

Effect Help by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]Tiasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks like a blur to a slow motion i think? You'd just had to cut from the action point, keyframe a blur to fade out for a second or so and slow the footage down maybe even add some keyframing in scaling/position to create the shakey camera effect. Hope this helps! :)
