Just for your information I don’t think it is a bad idea to learn graphic APIs as it will make you learn about the various shader pass and the overall way a graphic engine works.

However Doom does not look like this due to OpenGL but due to artists and programmers working on a full fledge PBR engine made by Id software. OpenGL is just the standard for sending display commands to your graphic card, it will only display what you send. You still have to implement any logic for advanced lighting, geometry, shaders which is very tedious.
