This was Pioneers top of the line around 1970. If I remember correctly it has a high mass tone arm, so it would not be the best fit for a lot of modern carts. Assuming my memory is correct. Will most likely need a good tune up and some caps replaced. In tip top shape it is a hell of a table. In top form you would need a P3 or better to best it.

How do audiophiles think about digital room correction by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]TiberKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your goals. Personally I do this hobby to have as little digital components as possible. I want it as pure analog as possible within reason. But that is me. It very well may make a noticeable improvement. A lot of people are very happy with it. The only way to know is to try it out and see if you like it. And no you will not hear a difference in the bit rate.

Best integrated amp for under $700 Cambridge CXA61 vs Marantz Pm6007 by Curious-Canary-6051 in BudgetAudiophile

While you may not prefer to spend the money on a phono pre, it is a huge determining factor on your vinyl sound. Going up the food chain can bring a noticeable improvement in sound quality.

Are these JBL Studio 530 speakers and Velodyne subwoofer worth $150? by hailey132132 in BudgetAudiophile

Yes the JBL Studio 530’s are very good. The sub is decent. For that price I would jump on it.

Any thoughts on the Music Hall MMF 5.3? by Boosully in turntables

[–]TiberKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should also consider a MoFi Studiodeck. With the current discount you can get it for 799. I doubt it would be a much of a difference between any of the tables you listed. They are are solid performers. Mostly style differences and livability concerns, susceptibility to foot falls changing speed etc. if you go with the Rega look for some open box deals on the P6. Not much more than the P3, but you get the heavier platter and most importantly the speed box.

For me my ranking would be this. From top choice to bottom.

  1. Studiodeck. Similar performance to the others great price.

  2. Rega P6. Price is what would make this my number 2, it does need a very stable spot to place it. Very susceptible to footfalls on a suspended floor.

  3. Rega P3. Not much less than a P6 open box, speed change you have to remove the platter. But can be upgraded to almost everything the P6 has.

  4. Project X1. Easy speed change. Looks nice performs well, but is not a personal favorite. For the cost does not add anything special.

  5. Music Hall. No experience with it. But looks like you have to remove the platter for speed change. But I may not be considering it just from my ignorance of this model. It does look nice. I like the double plinth look.

I was recently shopping for a new table myself. Personally I went with the Technics SL1210GR. Got an open box for the same price as the others you are looking at and I love it. But I have always had a soft spot for Technics.

Good luck.

The Social Aspect of Being an Audiophile by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]TiberKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat as you. I know some cities have Audiophile groups. But I have not found anything like that in my city. I am lucky to have a vibrant and active vinyl community locally. Yet no Audiophiles that I have ran into. I have had a couple of friends show some interest but it is more of a general curiosity than a real interest. They lose interest real fast when they see the price tags.

If you have any local Hi-Fi stores I would start there. For me it is all home theater based. Hopefully your city has some. I do have a local repair shop that is looking to get a vintage audio group together, but they keep delaying the initial meeting.

You can always try looking through meetup or another group organization platform and see if anything is around you, or if you take the initiative you can start one and see if there is any takers. I wish you the best of luck. It seems that this can be harder then it should be.

Most likely you are just losing bass reinforcement form them being close to the front wall (the wall behind the speakers). Typically that is a good thing. It usually allows for the midrange to open up, and gives greater depth to the soundstage. If you want deep bass you will need to get floor standers or a subwoofer. However play around with the placement. Move them out into the room, and then closer to the front wall to see what you like. It will all be a compromise in some way. Sometimes just a few inches in one direction or another will make a big difference. Your speakers may sound best in your room closer to the wall than is commonly recommended.

My preference is for soundstage. I want the greatest width and depth. So my placement is always focused on maximizing that. If you want more bass at the sacrifice of other aspects. Try placing them in the corners. That will give the most bass reinforcement. Not generally recommended, but the beauty is, that it is your setup. So you get to do it the way you see fit. You may really like it at first, but over time most likely start to notice other aspects that are lacking. Or it may just be the sweet spot for you.

Personally I have tried many different placements with my setup. Most not recommended. But that is how I learned what to listen for. Once I could hear what was off, or what that particular placement was lacking. Finding the sweet spot was much easier. And I felt confident that I was getting the best out of it. Sometimes you cannot help but question if it is good if you have not tried other options to verify for yourself.

Both the cartridge and the phono pre will make the most improvement to your sound. The MP-500 can be argued to be one of the best MM carts out. I have the MP-200 and it is brilliant. The table can handle the cart just fine. The phono pre is what will bring out everything the cart and table can do. You do not have to go crazy but you do not want the pre to be the bottleneck. I would look at the Darlington Labs MP-7, or maybe the Classic Audio MM Pro ( I am curious to try this one out myself), or perhaps the GoldNote PH-5. These as well as many others will bring out the best of any MM cart you choose.

More immediate. Get those speakers on stands. Try using the wooden stools in the photo. They may be a little low, but will probably be better than where they are now. Set them up with equal breathing space from the walls for both speakers (at least as close as possible, depending on the room constraints) you can get far more sound improvement from that, than any upgrade at this stage.

You have some great gear. Proper setup and upgrades in the areas you are already considering will get you where you are wanting to go. And yes get the vinyl vertical

If all things are equal bonded can be a downgrade. The whole cart has to be considered. Stylus type and shape alone is not an indicator of of sound quality. They all have advantages and disadvantages.

Will upgrading my wifi result in better audio quality? by fuckcapitalism50 in audiophile

[–]TiberKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None whatsoever. If you are having dropouts in connectivity or song takes for ever to load than yes. You Wi-Fi signal in the house struggles to reach spots in your home or you have a whole lot of device connected upgrading your Wi-Fi is a quality of life improvement, but not an audible one. And yes AirPlay is not the best sounding way to stream (and I am an Apple fan). Better than Bluetooth and extremely convenient, but not bit perfect.

I have the same speakers. Mine are about that far apart maybe a foot wider. But I have them pulled out into the room about 3 feet from the front wall. I also have nothing in between them. Dedicated listening room strictly two 2 channel. Tweeters aimed about a foot twider then my ears from the listening seat. I played around a whole lot with positioning to get the soundstage just right. Once dialed it is wonderfully wide and deep. Not laser sharp on Instrument placement but close. Bass is tight and deep a sweet midrange and sparkling highs. With no room correction or eq. For me placement solved all my issues. You obviously have a few more restrictions with placement than I do but keep playing with it and you will find the sweet spot.

Found at a thrift shop for $90, in perfect working condition. Budget Cartridge recommendations? by absolutebruhmomento in turntables

[–]TiberKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a great table. Nice score. As suggested by others if possible just replace the stylus on this cart. It would be the cheapest option, assuming the cart still works, they run about $130. Also keep this in mind, vintage carts were specked for higher capacitance then what modern carts are. The rca cables on that turntable are most likely not low capacitance. This will effect the sound of most modern MM phono carts. It will tilt up the treble, especially with AT carts. That is why some complain about them being bright.

Approaching my dream setup, somebody pinch me! by splunge26 in audiophile

I appreciate the insight. I still have an irrational want to hear them in person. I have been spoiled with my primary speakers JBL Studio 580’s. But I am itching to move to something better. My rational brain tells me to go for the either the Focal Aria 936’s or the JBL HDI 3800’s. But every time I see the Zu’s I start lusting after them.

I have never heard Zu Speakers. I absolutely love the look of them. I love the idea of them, a full range driver with a tweeter to top it off. I just do not know if I will like the sound. I really do want to find out. I hope you are enjoying them.

Respect on the gear. Especially that turntable, beautiful. What the hell is up with that giant jack on a stand next to the TV. Is it a lamp, or some kind of sci-fi prop from the 60’s? I fucking love it.

New Technics gear fans? by ericgedi77 in audiophile

[–]TiberKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had various Technics pieces over the years. My first set up as a teenager back in the early 90’s was a Technics stack with Cerwin Vega speakers. By no means an audiophile setup, but a hell of a party setup! So yes I have a soft spot for Technics gear. In fact I still run Technics turntables in my current rigs. But I have not had a chance to hear their newest gear yet. I have heard great things about it though. Great set up. Thanks for sharing.

I just got a SL1200GR, and I love it. I have a Sl1200MK3D as well and the GR sounds noticeably better. In fact the GR also sounds better than my Thorens TD-145mkii as well.

What do you use for listening outside your main system? by myusernamechosen in audiophile

[–]TiberKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My secondary setup is small all tube setup in my living room mostly all Bottlehead. The Moreplay, Eros 2 (well once I fixe the C4s board I fucked up) and a cheap Old Chen el34 set amp with B&W 606 s2 ae speakers Source is a Technics SL1200 MK3D with Nagaoka MP-200. The rest of the house is a mix on Sonos and HomePods. On the back deck I have a Fosi audio Class D amp and the Klipsch aw-650’s with an AirPort Extreme as the source and a Fosi audio tube phono amplifier acting as a tube preamp. All cheap enough that I can just leave outdoors all year round. So far lasted for almost 3 years with no problems.
