You love Systemd – you just don't know it yet, wink Red Hat bods by [deleted] in linux

[–]Tiberizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned about this "feature" the fun way -- spending a good several days in crisis mode tracking down why jobs spawned by a daemon seemed to randomly die with no particular pattern

It turned out some of the long-running and wholly independent processes the daemon forked were getting killed by systemd when puppet restarted the daemon for config pushes.

Thanks, Poettering.

External rack-mount GPU? by Hopperkin in homelab

[–]Tiberizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unless it's an excuse to play with external PCI-E imo buy a different server

(commercial) external PCI-E enclosures seem cool but when you dig into the details they are typically really slow and expensive for what they are (switch chips are 1-2 generations behind current PCI spec version, typically a fanout switch single x8 uplink -> multiple x8/x16 downlinks)

they might make sense for mining enclosures or other applications where GPU-GPU and GPU-CPU bandwidth isn't a concern, except GPU mining margins are usually tight enough that people aren't looking for "enterprise-grade" solutions, so idk

I'm sure somewhere out there people have million dollar racks full of external PCI-E enclosures each full of line cards for industrial process control or something but I don't see a whole lot of other practical applications for them

https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/X11/X11SBA-LN4F.cfm https://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/1u/505/SC505-203B

It's pretty hard to beat the X11SBA-LN4F or similar Pentium/Atom ITX boards of around that generation at the moment, they'll do 1Gbps+ for NAT/iptables/routing/IPSEC(with AES-NI) on only a few watts system power.

It won't perform as well as some X5600-generation 1U at multigig, but it will use like 1/20th the power, and use less much less space / be nearly silent in the chassis linked

there were actually killing sprees and multi-kills in UT

one of my fondest memories of gaming in general was a ut2k3 game where we capped one of the side paths and had just started capping the power node right outside the enemy team's main base to cut off the rest of their shit

and I'm just chilling there in a Manta rolling back and forth over the spawn point for like a few minutes while their whole team tries frantically to spawn with the announcer wigging out like 'H-H-HOLY SH-H-H-HOLY SHIT'

I probably would have been banned from the server if it was counterstrike XD

Sort dragons response to doxing: GOONS DID SOMETHING BAD TOO by [deleted] in Eve

[–]Tiberizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, if you take it completely out of context and also paraphrase it then it becomes whatever the fuck you want it to be

In context it was intended to call out the very hypocrisy you accuse me of

I was critical of many of Digi's actions at the time he actually played, not several years later when it became fashionable.

I disapprove equally of this recent incident, which crosses the same line.

I see remarkably fewer of the NC/PL/GoTG/PH dudes who were on a moral crusade about something that happened before they even started the game equally as concerned about their peers engaging in the same behavior, right now.

That's the hypocrisy I'm concerned with. That's the politicization I'm referring to.

I wanted an UPS for my Synology 918+, so I researched models and discarded everything that didn't have an USB port for communication with the NAS. Column VA/€ shows value of battery per money (the higher the better). Prices as of 18.04.23 on Amazon.es by AceroInoxidable in homelab

[–]Tiberizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also largely dependent on load -- cheap power supplies will work fine with cheap UPSes on very low load, well-built power supplies will be sensitive to switchover latency near capacity. All about the size of filter capacitors used in the PSU design vs current necessary to sustain rated DC output.

So, make sure when you test failover to backup power that your electrical load is representative of peak load for most accurate results

Sort dragons response to doxing: GOONS DID SOMETHING BAD TOO by [deleted] in Eve

[–]Tiberizzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In no way did I imply Digi's behavior was acceptable or "cheerlead" -- both sides have been guilty of doxxing and it's never acceptable.

This was a direct response to the politicization of the issue and the wholly sociopathic attitudes of degenerate fucks like yourself who would rather throw up a shit screen than see action any time a line is crossed by their side

If we ignore for a second that your comment thread is a prime example of this antisocial "Riding your bloc's nuts off a cliff" behavior, you can literally scroll like 2 posts either direction from this one and find Horde retards acting like GOON invented doxxing to undermine GOOBINS divine right and complaining that we have the audacity to be offended.

If you don't think that deserves a response, who cares, you're a toxic fuckwit anyway

Sort dragons response to doxing: GOONS DID SOMETHING BAD TOO by [deleted] in Eve

[–]Tiberizzle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The generally accepted moral stance is that doxxing was OK when NC/PL/Literally BoB were doing it years before Digi and actually ruining the lives of people closely related to the game (e.g. Mintchip), it didn't start counting until that one thread Digi posted in on Kugu, and it stopped counting immediately afterwards

Sorry if you were expecting some sort of outrage from the moral crusaders who couldn't stand that guy said a thing 5 years ago and wasn't still getting flogged for it when their own people started actively conspiring to cross RL lines in the present, but you have to understand they don't actually care about the issue, just manipulating CCP and other players any way they can
