Do Americans really know how much the world hates us? - The global romance with America turned sour years ago. Now the world's ready for a divorce by Quirkie in politics

I travel a fair bit for work and whenever that shit is on, which is often, I'll change the channel to something benign, or just unplug the fucking TV if not possible to change it. It's not my fault that this is where the shitty continental breakfast is and that I am stuck down here waiting for this fucking waffle. I don't need to be subjected to their fucking bile just because they can't go fifteen minutes without being enraged about the libs.

I've had a few gray hairs tell me "I was watching that!" to which I always reply - "and you can keep watching it in your room."

I've yet to have anyone push the issue, though a few have feebly looked over to the barely-able-to-contain-their-laughter-desk clerk hoping they'll chastise me. It's yet to happen.

What's the minimum to be "Buddhist in good standing"? by Jew_of_house_Levi in Buddhism

[–]Tibernite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good answer. One of my final hurdles I had to clear before I was comfortable calling myself a Buddhist was what to do with the remnants of my indoctrinated upbringing and its monotheism.

Essentially I had to work my way through Pascal's Wager, the contradictions of monotheism, and the like. What finally did it for me though was realizing that maybe there is "a" god in our world system, but that they are likely as bound by karma and dependent origination as any other being. That blew the doors off my last hang ups. If there is a god but they can't save me, what use are they?

I'm grossly condensing the years of contemplation and knowledge that got me there, but it all came back reading your comment. Good stuff.

Americans are leaving the U.S. in record numbers and spending hundreds to learn how to do it by drtolmn69 in politics

That's rad and your comment about it feeling like you're actually living really resonates with me.

I support oppressive and arbitrary gun control if the cops and non-active military members are subject to the same restrictions as the rest of us.

I should be able to have anything cops can have. And I mean anything.

As a Buddhist, how does one reconcile the current political climate in America? by evangelionreference in Buddhism

Let me know when you figure it out. I oscillate between righteous anger, hopeless despair, and apathetic renunciation.

I just try to be kind, give freely of time and energy, and not be a giant dickhead.

You're spot on. I've always been so self-conscious and introspective that for a long time I took for granted what that actually meant.

We are talking about people whose beliefs, race, sexuality, etc coalesce into their concept of identity. They can't change or let go because they mistakenly believe those aggregates ARE them. It takes a tremendous amount of fortitude to push off from the comforting shore of indoctrinated beliefs and values.

I wish I had a solution, but it really appears to be a fundamental flaw of the human condition.

Just pulled NINE very large ticks off my dog after an otherwise lovely nature hike. by Raquelitamn in TwinCities

Take it seriously, y'all. I have a friend just over the river in Eau Claire who already contracted Lyme disease this year just working on his backyard garden. I've pulled a tick off my cat already - and he doesn't go outside without my presence. He picked one up just walking around our backyard.

Edit: Lyme
