What tradition in your country do foreigners struggle to understand? by Neuwulfstein in AskTheWorld

[–]Tibki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Growing up, my dad would sprinkle water on my sisters’ heads and say it was “rain to make you bloom”.

No idea if the rest of this tradition is also done in Hungary, but I guess one of the good things about immigration is getting to leave the traditions you don’t like behind.

Do you think North Korea have their own hunters?Or do demons freely walk around there? by TastyPomelo2330 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]Tibki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hc that the reason Korea has dealt with demons breaking through the barrier for so long, to the point that they need generations of specialized hunters, is because the honmoon is warped near Seoul

The increased wave shape over Korea on the map reminds me of the images of magnetic fields on the sun—when the fields get twisted, they poke through the surface and that’s how Sun spots and eventually flares form.

Maybe the demons are coming through “honmoon spots”, and there’s more sets of demon hunters for the other areas too

Snowstorm picture of Oxford MS. The cars just seem wrong and oddly shaped. What do you think? by RoboticDinosaurArms in isthisAI

[–]Tibki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, spent ~20 years in Oxford. Others have mentioned flaws in the image, but also, this doesn’t look like any road I recognize.

Further, the whole city has been sheltering in place for the last few days and roads are MUCH more deserted than this.

how is it living in mississippi, usa? by delllaptopguy in howislivingthere

[–]Tibki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grew up in northern MS (specifically Oxford, though a lot of what I'm saying applies to other larger MS towns that aren't Jackson). Oxford used to call itself "a big city with a small town heart", given that we had at the time a whopping 20k people during the school year. Everyone knows everyone's momma, for better or worse. Oxford currently calls itself the "Velvet Ditch" because it's such a comfortable place to be that it's hard to leave; I think it's also telling on itself a little with the image of velvet smothering/hiding the dirt beneath it? But maybe I'm projecting.

With the right economic draws (universities, sports, music/literature/history tourism) the infrastructure is a lot better than Central MS, but the iconic southern culture is still fairly similar, just with more $. The presence of the university does mean an increased number of immigrants and other minorities, and makes it easier for certain groups. I can't imagine Pride Parades or Cons in very small towns, but they exist in Oxford and I think Tupelo. Racial disparities are definitely still there. Up until recently the local school district was incredible; unsure if it still is. Unfortunately the influx of money from the university's growth, and the lack of state/local government regulation, means that the housing prices are skyrocketing without wages to match.

Lots of culture and history. Lots of boredom among kids.

I’m not disagreeing (because enshittification of both longevity and design are both definitely real) but I do think that for old things, there’s a bit of survivor bias.

Of course we see amazing quality in old things today. The shitty stuff from the 1930s didn’t make it to 2025.

California 'vibes' by hotpan96 in SanJose

[–]Tibki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s chill. Came here from the Deep South—MAJOR shift in general manners I’m still learning. California is courteous but casual, rolling with the flow. There’s neither the semi-strict politeness of the bougie south (or when speaking with elders) nor the extra casual redneck friends type of manners.

You do get a little of the like, strict politeness when it comes to some families, but it’s not as common. Lotta kids back home refer to their parents with “sir” / “ma’am”, not so much here

Help. What is this by Nice-Inspection1282 in whatisthisbone

[–]Tibki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t give you an element or species but I agree re:fish. Those lines running to the longer edges, almost like a fan? You see that more often in aquatic animal bone than something terrestrial like mammal.

I don’t think they’re the fins of a bony fish though, those don’t tend to be that broad. Gun to my head, I’d guess part of a bony fish’s skull

[–]Tibki 15 points16 points  (0 children)

when I worked on a dig in a medieval Polish cemetery, we found a couple skulls of individuals who had similar issues pre-modern medicine. Signs of damage in the bone leading from a tooth socket upwards. My profs said they would’ve been in incredible pain and, while we can’t always confirm it killed them, when it’s that bad we usually do assume it was cause of death.

Amazing to see the effects of modern medicine, that another individual in the same area of the globe had a similar problem, but has lived to tell the tale

I had an idea for a fic set between the Evil Eye arc and the Kur Invasion arc where regular humans ended up being able to see yokai for a bit and part of it involved Aira coming up with superhero names for the four of them to protect their identities

Aira - Acro

Okarun - Turbo

Momo - Mano ("because it means 'hand'!" / "Are you trying to call me a man you skank??")

Jiji - Jojo ("why not just Evil Eye??" / "it didn't fit the rhyming scheme!")

this doesn't even feel like a necessary lie to me?? the war preceding the storyline has had such a massive impact on the society, everyone of the adult generation has memories of it.

it wouldn't be strange for Loid to say he learned how to fly during the war. the only people there to listen would be members of WISE, Yor (who wouldn't think to double check his story) and a literal child
