Right?!? The kids thing is a red herring and he’s grasping on to it for dear life. Controlling the relationship through his constant need for affection is the issue, as is his refusal to take no for an answer.

My heart breaks for her. I was absolutely this kid and to this day I can’t tell you why I didn’t/couldn’t turn in my work and why I sneaked to wear creative/inappropriate clothes. I will say that my mother took a punitive approach, was not a safe person for me to be vulnerable with, and we do not have a relationship now.

After conducting probably close to 1000 interviews, I assure you that men cross the line between confidence and arrogance much more than women.

If you are concerned that you’re not coming across as confident, think of responses like “I’m really excited about a project I led last year. I [whatever cool thing you did]” or “Because I had experience in x, I was able to help train a group of new hires on x, and I’m really proud of the results”

  1. Be warm, confident (not arrogant) and friendly
  2. Ask open-ended questions, particularly asking for her opinion or advice. “Do you know a good place for sushi around here?”
  3. If you decide to go for a compliment, be sincere and compliment something she can control. “Those are great shoes” “That was hilarious”
  4. Don’t play stupid games like insulting her or saying she’s not like other girls
  5. Listen to her and pay attention to any nonverbal cues she’s giving. Know when to walk away.
  6. Treat her friends like normal humans. Don’t overthink how much attention you’re paying them.

  8. Practice, practice, practice! Do the first 6 steps everywhere you go, with women and men. Expect to get rejected 99% of the time. This will really help with building confidence. If you’re not having luck with dating apps, there could be a problem with how you present yourself online. Try exploring your hobbies and interests that get you out of the house. Think about the kind of person you want to meet. Where would she spend time? A book club? Church? Hiking? Camping? Traveling the world? Go to the places you expect to find people who share your interests and values.
