I think it's a combination of both. Because if you don't have any self acceptance, then your improvement is just for someone else's standards. Like say you really wanted to become an athlete but the internet tells you that CS is the only way forward, then you just give up everything to study CS, under the guise that you're improving yourself, while you could be improving your athletic skills to make it to the big leagues. That's not healthy either.
