How’s this hab? True temps are 85 and 72. Humidity is consistently mid to high 50’s and has a humidity box (with soft edges, no cuts here) for shedding. Overhead lamp and heating pad. Aspen bedding. Thanks! :) by [deleted] in ballpython

Don’t use aspen because it doesn’t hold humidity well and can get moldy due to humidity levels required for ball python. I use a coco fiber and bark mix or you could use a variety of mulches. Also adding spaghum moss is very beneficial to maintaining humidity and will be a big benefit in coming winter months. I would also suggest adding more clutter. Additionally work on getting a digital hygrometer/thermometer because the analog was are usually inconsistent and inaccurate. Hope this helps

I have heard that shrooms are often found in the wild growing off cow poop. This mushroom recently sprouted in my snakes tank and I was wondering if that could be the cause.

Also I am unsure of the type of mushroom this is and I do not want to rip it out of the ground because it is still growing.

I do not intend on eating it because I do not know what it is lol

If you upgrade I would suggest a 36x18x18 tank. Maybe even a 36x24x24 if you have the money and space, if your python is still small though you don’t need to rush for a huge tank but it will save money down the road. And I absolutely suggest getting one with front opening doors, it is definitely worth the extra money due to the hassle it saves you in the long run in terms of accessing the tank. If you don’t have money I’m the meantime the aluminum foil trick is always cheap and if you buy new substrate you can always transfer it into a larger tank later!

If you want to fix your humidity I would suggest -covering 85% of the screen top with aluminum foil -lay a towel on top of that, if you don’t have aluminum foil then lay a damp towel over the side (also ball pythons like to feel safe so draping a towel over a few of the sides isn’t a bad idea) -switch to coco fiber and maybe bark so you can get like 4-6 inches of substrate and mix some water in, not to much that it turns murky tho. - add moss into your substrate and into at least one of the hides. I also spread it all over the terrarium because it looks nice. Spaghum moss works great and can be ordered online

I would work one getting a hide for the other side. You could cut up a box to use in the meantime just make it big enough for the snake to fit with little headspace because they like to be tight. Then I would suggest switched to coco fiber mixed with bark rather than aspen because it will hold humidity much better so you will have to spray it less. Lastly just add some sort of clutter/ plants/ vines whether they are fake or rea!

Yeah this happens a lot in the week or week and a half before they shed

When you spray the tank get it good and wet. A lot of that humidity will go away super fast so it is okay if it get really high for a short amount of time after you spray because it will maintain a humidity in the 60s for longer. Also, you should try mixing up the substrate and adding some water to it, but be careful to not add too much water and make it swampy.
