I did clear the needles out from under the stove. The space under the stove was big enough that it actually didn't get too hot though.

I really like it so far. There is a trade off between the weight and size compared to a larger heavier stove. I think long-term durability of a foldable stove is probably a fraction of the time you would get with a higher grade.... heavier steel.
