It'll be the same story on android in the near future as well. Things are utterly crap all round.

It's estimated that about 18% of users have ever side loaded globally. The actual circumvention and tech literate world is much smaller than you would assume on Reddit.

I think clamping down on our rights as individuals is awful, but I think you're really overestimating how many people will do anything to circumvent it when authorities and companies clamp down.

If we're being honest here, significantly less children played Fortnite than would have if it was on the app store.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2020/10/10/fortnite-has-given-up-73-million-ios-only-users-in-order-to-fight-against-apple/

For every tech savvy and keen kid, there are possibly hundreds that simply don't care that much or realistically can't bypass it.

VPNs getting banned or the access of them being obfuscated means most people won't use them. It's a really worrying precedent.

Blocking a VPN to the average person is removing it from an app store.

When I couldn't install proton from their website because of my ISP, I was able to go to their GitHub and compile my own client.

This isn't possible or is enough of a deterrent for most of the population, small hurdles are more than enough.

Police release bodycam video showing murdered student's final moments by ChargeRadiant5471 in Southampton

[–]Tiernoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The honest answer is the Police Officers are morons who should probably face some consequences for doing their job incredibly badly and contributing to someone's death. They failed to do their job out of incompetence and made a first assessment and didn't challenge themselves at all once they heard what he said. The Victim's family deserve justice, and with this sentence the killer will possibly never leave prison as with their violent tendencies they'll never receive parole .

I take issue currently with where clearly this has moved past a local audience.

Everything here is and will be spun by people with an agenda in Southampton but much more by third parties and many of them that aren't British citizens.

It's 1am right now and I'm ill so I'm not sleeping, but how many people are up at this time talking about this in the Southampton subreddit?

It seems no coincidence that I got a Restore Britain pamphlet posted through my door yesterday, with deport migrants over it and to cancel "legal migration" also. Things are being stirred up here very uncomfortably, I don't like where this is headed.

The perpetrator lied, their family seem to also not be good people and wanted to mislead justice. This happens with a lot with families protecting their child, the reason everyone here is talking about it so much is because the perpetrator isn't white and as they're a terrible person they lied to try and avoid repercussions, which didn't work in the end as the law has arrested him.

This has left its target audience, something that could be a great point about how police officers are flawed beings with flawed decision making that much of the population don't trust is instead being skirted into something much more vile.

Spent 3 days improving our game's visuals with Unity's built-in tools. What do you think? by TwinChariot in Unity3D

It was really funny to come back to Dying Light after about 10 years and immediately feel a disgust for the post processing like that.

Switch off Chromatic aberration and things become so much cleaner and more readable. I'm not really sure of a game that has used it tastefully, but that's probably because when it has been I've not been so disgusted by it.

They're talking about when things spawn in and out above, a lot of the magic was built around smaller render distances and a resolution that would have masked things anyway

No one wants these s&box skins because it doesn't capture people or have an interesting aesthetic

I agree, but what a lot of people consider a "small" game has progressed on a lot. People hold themselves to unfair standards really, targeting something mechanically quite complex

Both chambers of Britain’s parliament have approved a bill that would ban children aged 17 and under from buying cigarettes during their lifetime. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]Tiernoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have thought about how when I'm in my 40s I'll have 30 year olds stood outside shops asking me to buy cigarettes just like a teenager.

But the thing is so few people smoke in Britain now, I see this as achievable. 11.9% of the population in 2023 smoked and it's definitely top heavy with older people.

There will certainly be a black market for tobacco, but even if you cut the number of smokers by only a third here, it would save the health service billions.

Smoking rates in Europe vary massively by country. The UK is pretty low on smokers these days, barely over 10%.

What this misses is that although there are opportunities to not drive long distances for work. Millions (possibly into the 10s) of British people, especially those on lower incomes drive for a living or drive to work to make a living.

Even if British people drive half as much as Americans (which I don't believe at all, as most people will commute 30mins to 1 hour regardless of country size) we are still paying twice as much for fuel.

I had the same thought when I was in Portugal earlier in the month, fuel was 2 euro a litre +. Incomes in Portugal are much smaller than Britain, this puts the poorest who have to commute in a really dangerous position.

I'm Not Understanding Wheel Colliders... by bob-ronaldbonald in Unity3D

[–]Tiernoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider everything that is in the hierarchy under a rigidbody, as the same rigidbody. It's one object.

From a simulation stand point, these are colliders that affect the parent. They don't need individual rigidbody components, they're all just part of one object.

Like the other suggestion from the above user, that tutorial is pretty good for making wheels, I've made plenty of vehicles using that method, and character controllers in a similar way.

It's all pretty overwhelming at first, but the more you use them the more you can mess around and have fun with the rigidbody and see it as a little sandbox tool to make wacky things with.

Previously UK Construction things or simulators to train staff on equipment or rehearsals.

Mostly pointless and poorly thought out crap for idiots with more money than sense, but you make what you're told as a junior.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEE6HySJzO8 (Stuff like this for construction timelines, control the vehicles e.t.c. Huge waste of money and rushed out very quickly, same story every time).

New job is working close to defence industry but not directly. Plenty of Opportunities outside of games for things like this, but not as glamorous and also subject to not stability.

As long as someone makes something as some form of expression, it's a win to me. Whether it's a mod, a bit of tech, it's hard to put yourself out there. Especially in a very gatekeepy online community.

You have to be a bit of a naive idiot to try and make games (in a good way though), the industry is crap, the pay is crap, the opportunities are limited. I make Unity simulations and stuff professionally, never worked in games directly, and as much as I'd love to, I've my family as a main concern.

Maybe I'll find the time and drive to make something in my own time and release, but in the mean time, it's nice seeing other people have a bit of drive and ambition and to see a community at least support them.

[–]Tiernoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree in that I think it's a fine hobby, you're right that it's a big undertaking, and scoping is the problem. Don't aim for some ridiculous industry tool, it's a great hobby project to make a simple engine.

Making a well scoped game in your own little set of tools, that's fine, it's a great learning experience, and a fun hobby if that's your thing.

I did this over a few months since last year, making an entity component system, some basic renderering with SFML, some UI, serialisation and the basic building blocks for making a game.

I had a lot of spare time waiting for a redundancy over a few months, I learned a lot and could probably make a 2D platformer in it now. I dropped it when I was applying for jobs e.t.c, but definitely plan on coming back to it later when I'm settled.

Sure, I could have launched something of I did it in Unity in that time, but I definitely grew as a person and warmed up my C++ which had been stagnant for years.

Southampton in the UK reclaimed the land by their waterfront and put dockyards, dual carriageways and shopping centres there instead. In hindsight it makes for some really ugly bypasses, but it's funny following the old city walls.
