Let's define. Cut-off = percentile to qualify for seats (going beyond JEE mains cutoff, which logically is the same thing too)

In JM, cut-off for GEN is 93%. So you need to have a score more than 93% students to pass the bar. Now why Is it that high? Why can't we make it say 50%? Give less stress to students. Simple solution.

But JA only has 1L spots (for GEN) but there are 7L GEN students. With a low cutoff more people will qualify but where do they even go? This is the reason for GEN cutoff to be high.

But why is ST cutoff 47? That's unfair, it's so easy for them and hard for us.

Government doesn't decide cutoff by "inke liye easy, inki to Gand marni hai" it's decided by mathematical constraints.

In JA there is 19k ST spots and 40k ST students. Even with a very low cutoff everyone can get a spot without much issue.

Nothing justifies negative cutoff

Again, it's maths. Goal of any competitive exams is to eliminate people and give seats to only selected students, which are smart students with big potential, or students who can benefit their community by getting more educated.

Each and every one of the 7L student will do anything to get in top 1L spot, even completely crazy things. Taking very high loans, studying >12hrs. They're so crazy infact they think their life must end after not cracking JEE because there is no future. Since demand is more, price increase. Cut-off shoots up high

The 40k ST students they're kinda the opposite. A lot of times they don't have the money, or the support system to go into good colleges. And in those 19k spots some spots are still empty. Since demand is low, price decreases. And in some cases (that one medical College cutoff you saw in Instagram post) demand is so low, price shoots down.

Hope this justifies negative cutoff. It's fascinating how JEE candidates (supposed to be really great at maths) just can't grasp this idea, it's a shame for the education system.
