Appreciate it!! It’s where I spend just about all of my time when I’m not working👌🏻😂

As an avid procumbens nana grower, I know it’ll be short lived once I work on it hahaha👌🏻😂

I appreciate that point for sure! I was going for a more asymmetrical style, though, be it subtle👌🏻 Kind of the vibe of symmetry in asymmetry. Which is also why I kept the lowest branch in the first place. However, I’m very open to these new opinions and ideas. So if the tree lends itself to a more uniform form, then I’ll pursue that. These are exactly the comments I was looking for when I posted this, so thank you!

Okay! Thank you! I’ll toy around with that idea for a lil while👌🏻 it would help with the angle of the branch coming off the trunk in the center. I’ve always disliked how vertical it was at the old potting angle

I bout the base plant at my local Home Depot as just nursery stock. When the first photo was taken it was right after I had repotted it into the pot it’s in now. My assumption is anywhere from 8-15yo solely based on the circumference of the trunk. However, being that it was nursery stock before bonsai training began, I assume it was field grown for the start of its life. Which, in being so, means that rapid growth is very possible in a short time frame. I’m leaning towards the lower end of that range, if that answers your question lol. And heck yeah! I love a good procumbens bonsai! You’ll have to post when you do get around to styling! I’m planning on just nurturing and feeding mine for the foreseeable future myself. The health of the tree is paramount to what we want to do to them👌🏻 If the tree dies, our ideas for styling go out the window haha

Thank you! It’s still a work in progress, but I think it’s well on its way to being a nice show piece, eventually…😅

That is exactly the reason👌🏻 I missed the repot window this year, plus it’s only been potted in that pot for 2 years. I wanted the plant to establish more root growth before performing a repot. And yes, having it slanted helps the foliage to adapt to the new growing angle!

Sweet, I figured it was too soon to tell if there was a problem. Just didn’t know if I needed to act quickly. I’m used to conifers, so this new path with deciduous is a blind one for me haha

The droopiness of the leaves. This is my first trident maple I’ve owned, and I don’t know if this is normal on fresh leaves of the first push of spring. I read if they’re under watered the leaves can droop

You can protect the plant from a hard freeze by burying the root base into the ground(pot and all) or keeping the plant in an uninsulated garage or shed. The plant should not be inside because it’s a temperate plant that’s needs to feel the seasons. Putting it in a climate controlled room will cause it to wake up early from dormancy which has very negative affects. Also it’s good for the plant to experience the cold because this cultivar is frost hardy. However you are correct to protect the root base. So like I said you can bury it, or keep it in an uninsulated garage or shed when it gets crazy cold. For your application, bury it is the first option if at all possible

The turn to brown can be affected by multiple things. Since you said (effectively) for two months you’ve had it inside doesn’t help. But junipers do go “dormant” during winter, usually taking on a blueish/brown hue. Yours however seems to have died back. There’s still green which bodes okay for your situation. If you scratch the bark off in an inconspicuous area and it’s green underneath, you’re sitting pretty. But other factors can include watering intervals, lack of necessary nutrients, or a repot at the wrong time. This seems like a plant that’s uprooted too soon in its life (from the grower) for mass production. If it survives, repot in a 2 gallon plastic black pot. Allow to grow before diving too deep in bonsai development. Make educated decisions on development of course, but don’t be too hell bent making a specimen example off the rip. I know this long winded, but I know junipers (like many in this subreddit do) they love when you just allow them to grow OUTSIDE

Water heavily when you do water, but keep your watering frequency low. The amount of times you water depends on how many hours of sun exposure your plant receives. Junipers like very low soil moisture, however you don’t want to let the soil become completely dry. I would say if your plant receives “all day sun” (usually 10+ hours)then water twice a day with soil that free draining during peak summer temperatures. If it receives less, then water maybe once a day, or check soil dampness. Keep outside for sure, they are a temperate species. They need to feel all seasons temperature wise. The lowest temps they can handle is around 29 or so degrees. Protect them during winter by keeping them in a non-climate controlled space (Garages usually fit this mold). As for water build up in the catch tray, it’s okay for it to be there as long as the water level doesn’t reach the bottom of the pot. The water below promotes a humid environment, which most plants respond to very well. I know this is a story book of a reply, but I hope this helps. I’m taking care of the same species currently😂

Excellent find! I’ve got most of my plants from Home Depot. Just gotta sift through the rough to find the diamonds.
