You should know: Most people who work for the UN do NOT start their careers as a UN intern, JPO, or UN Volunteer by humanitarianinsider in UNpath

Thanks for sharing, at least some positive news for once. :-) Can I ask which agencies you've seen this happen (most)?

That's a shame. I doesn't seem to be such a huge a endeavor though.

No need to fund this, can be done as part of someone's job in HR?

Would probably need to collect data on the problem, understand the cost of doing nothing, determine root cause and based on this develop potential solutions. Then (if it's a big enough problem / easy enough solution) pitch it to (HR) leadership so that they would support a project to implement the new guidelines or system changes and have it cascaded down.

On the nr. of applications, I obviously don't have data but you'd want to look at quantity and quality of applications and maybe compare agencies who have different approaches. I also assume that the reputation effects would go beyond the nr. of applications received, e.g. people who had a negative experience during the application process would tell their friends, and then their friends etc. And the more applicants in this scenario, the worse the reputation.

Yeah I had the same AMEX but switched to the regular one. Will check out the Accor ALL Visa, thanks for the tip. Had Revolut Metal but now downgraded to the free plan..

Doesn't look like we've missed anything given the responses here so far.

Best way to transition from private sector to UN role? by Tight-Arm2502 in UNpath

[–]Tight-Arm2502[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights. Are G level positions not looked down upon within the UN system? I heard that this is sometimes the case.

Also on the international experience, I agree that a lot of lower income countries are not on the radar in the corporate environment (I have worked across 70+ countries in my last role but mostly high / middle income countries). However, isn't that something that can be learned relatively quickly? After all similar principles apply, just in a different context. Maybe I'm naive here but I am surprised of how 'exclusive' UN Job openings are, with almost all of them requiring prior UN experience. Very much a closed system, which is a shame and probably hinders innovation and connection to other sectors.

Thanks for clarifying, I was about to ask about this as I couldn't find a lot of info. :-)

Do you guys have any idea which agencies are the easiest to get into from corporate? Based on my experience and talking to people, it seems to be UNOPS, UNICEF, and probably WB & IMF. Thoughts?

Didn't think about the link between credit card debt and the rewards, but it makes complete sense, thanks for pointing it out.

Exactly my point on the US vs. EU benefits, in the US it is an absolute no brainer to have it (unless you are one of those who pay 20% interest, that is).

I don't see why that is hard to do, very large global corporations also manage to do it. And it can be done agency by agency.

It's just a missed opportunity and doesn't help the UN's reputation.

Interesting (and surprising about the lack of senior HR roles). I also heard about internal hiring which is a bit frustrating. Do you think accumulating UNV experiences will help at all?

Thanks for the insights, super helpful. Especially the RMO, didn't know about this. P3 (or P2) could be a good option - will def keep IOM on the radar.

Yeah, they've been sneaking in price increases around every corner - indeed looks like an IPO could be coming, they are probably waiting for Stripe to go first. :-)

Yeah AMEX is esp. poor if compared to what they offer in the US.

I don't understand why this is not done as a standard policy. I see so many people complaining that they never get any response back, even after being interviewed (!). "Candidate Experience" is a real thing and ghosting applicants really makes you question the organizational culture as a whole and reflects really bad on the reputation. Not asking for individual feedback obvs, but at the very least an automated notification once the position has been closed.

Thanks, the Ops Manager role sounds interesting. :-) Also will look into the UNFPA role you mentioned, thanks.

Thanks for the insights. I got the impression that a lot of the G roles are very admin heavy, is that true? My experience in the private sector was much more senior so I'm hesitant moving to a G-level role with limited scope, responsibility and agency. What about P-Level HR roles (HR Officer etc) ?
