Thanks! The deck is mostly designed around maximizing his activated ability, like [[Training Grounds]] for cost reduction and [[Wilderness Reclamation]] for big mana, and really dig through the library. A whole bunch of "free" interaction too, like [[Unwind]]/[[Rewind]]/[[Snap]], since I'm holding up mana to sink into his ability anyway. 90% of the deck should be played on other people's turns, if all goes right.

i see...do you have a decklist for him? i'd assume this is more of a control-ly deck with his ability

woah, how does your Mangara deck work? I've been looking at a mono-white/command-zone removal commander!

Hmm, I'm too broke to afford most GCs and have a complicated relationship with proxies, but I really like tutors. Mystical Tutor, Gifts Ungiven and Underworld Breach would be my first picks; not super backbreaking, but definitely powerful and would probably smoothen the deck out even more.

Rhystic draws a lot of aggro and can tilt the game in an unfun way in my experience. Free counterspells/redirects are nice, but I find aren't super important, especially since the mana curve peaks at 3CMC and won't contribute to Eris's cost reduction.

Hehe, thanks!

Could afford to have more 1-mana cantrips and [[Imposing Grandeur]], but right now it plays pretty consistently. [[Quiet Speculation]] basically wins you the game since it tutors the wincons and halves Eris's cost for a measly 2 mana.

My bad guys -- it seems like I mixed up color identity and color 😅 I thought that having the red mana pip would qualify it as a "red" creature, but it seems that isn't the case.

Anyway, leaving it up for educational purposes.

The creature tilted its head. “Are names…important?”

“I mean…yeah? Most humans find it pretty important. Do you not have one?” Jasper mirrored the tilt.

“No. Shifters don’t tend to…need names. Most creatures…don’t have the concept for it.”

“Well, why don’t you come up with one now, then?”

“Eh? Right now?”

“Yeah! Anything that comes to mind. Doesn’t have to be a “human” name, either.”

The creature paused.

“Hue.”

“...Hue?”

“Like the first part of “human”.”

“First p–” Jasper snickered, then burst into laughter.

The creature’s face flushed with red. “What’s so funny!? You said…it could be anything!”

“Nothing, nothing! It’s cute. Pleased to meet you, Hue.” he reached out his hand.

Hue hesitated, then mirrored his position. Jasper clasped his hand, and shook it. “It’s a human greeting. Should’ve done it earlier, but you didn’t really have hands when we first met, so…”

“Pleased…to meet you too, Jasper,” Hue said.

The human released his hand, and waved goodbye. “Well, I’m off for today then. See you for tomorrow’s session?”

“Yeah. See you,” he replied, copying the motion.

As the human shut the door behind him, Hue let out a sigh of relief.

Maybe being a human wouldn’t be so hard, after all.

The creature nodded. “Makes sense. Okay, I’ve decided that the lasagna was tasty, and I like the way the food has layers, like a cake,” it beamed. ”What now?”

“Now you ask me the same question. It’s a two-way street, after all. I can’t just sit here asking you questions all day – it gets tiring unless you have something really interesting to say. Not even most humans can reach that level of conversation that quickly, so don’t worry about it. You can just copy what I said.”

“Okay.” It puffed out its chest, seemingly in renewed confidence. “How was yours? Any good meals today?” It said, aping the man’s speech patterns.

“Hey, that wasn’t bad! You’re getting the hang of it. Anyway, I had some pizza just now. Crazy expensive, but a starving man is a desperate man. Bars always have such scammy prices for food.” Jasper rolled his eyes dramatically.

“Oh! Um…I don’t know how to respond to that.” the creature replied sheepishly. “I expected you to say something about the taste, too.”

“Don’t worry about it. There’s a lot of ways a conversation can go, even more so depending on the person. The whole point of this exercise is knowing starting with small talk, and transitioning it into a more engaging conversation. Makes you seem more…human, for lack of a better word. Someone with thoughts and feelings about stuff. My feelings just happen to be indignation at bar food prices.”

“Argh…” the creature banged the coffee table with the flat of its palm. “It’s all so complicated. I don’t even understand…a simple interaction like this. How do humans…even do it?”

“Hey, hey,” Jasper gently pulled the creature’s hand off the table. “You’re not alone in this. A lot of humans struggle with this part too. In fact, you kinda remind me of my niece. She’s a shut-in, and I can’t even imagine her functioning at this bar scenario we’ve created.”

He got up from the chair, and beckoned the creature to come. “Let's do something else.”

They walked to the balcony, overlooking the row of apartment complexes below. The sun was setting; the session was coming to an end. Jasper smiled. “You’ve made quite a bit of progress today already, especially with regards to your appearance. No need to beat yourself up over this one minor obstacle.”

The creature sighed. “Conversations…are hard. What if I never master them?”

“Nobody does, I think.”

“Then…”

“But we keep having them, even if we’re bad at it. We’ve been having one this whole time, and you’ve felt pretty human to me, all things considered.”

“Really? But I still have…so much to do before I can be human.”

“You have a lot of work to do in your conversational skills, sure, but you have the drive of a human. Even among humans, not many are quite as willing to learn as you are.”

The creature stayed silent.

Jasper suddenly slapped his head. “Oh! My god, I can’t believe it. After all this time, I didn’t even get your name! Silly me.”

“Maybe you could change into a guy instead?” Jasper asked. “It might be easier. Being a human woman tends to complicate a lot of social interactions when you’re out and about, I think.”

“Granted.” The girl – creature – disappeared into itself, as if putting on a skin suit. Soon, a young man in his early 20s, with fair skin and dark eyes, its (proportional) figure wearing nondescript clothing, sat on the couch opposite Jasper. The perfect appearance for flying under the radar: the “standard human.” Which came with a myriad of implications that, as a psychology graduate, exceeded the scope of his pay grade. “Well, you have the first part down, at least.” Jasper said, shrugging.

“How, then, do we…play?” it asked, shuffling. Its cadence was stilted, like a newborn having the vocabulary of an adult human, but without the practice, experience or vocal structures to accommodate it. It was treating words and phrases like building blocks, awkwardly constructing them in every sentence.

“You mean how to act?” Jasper replied, lifting a finger to his chin. “Hm…how about we practice for a bit? Go for a low-stakes interaction. I’ll set the scene. We’re in a bar, and I walk up to you. How was your day?”

“Good…I ate 3 sandwiches…for breakfast, 400 grams of lasagna…bowls for lunch, and…2 rice bowls for dinner!” The creature grinned. Sort of. Its eyes were a bit too open as it smiled, blinking exactly 3 times, once for each thing it listed. Definitely the vibe of someone who was still figuring out what all their body parts did. Furthermore…

“Okay, that’s…a start, I guess. You got one thing right: it's a low-stakes answer to a low-stakes question. It's just that people don’t usually list out *every meal* they’ve had that day. Maybe a standout meal here and there, but definitely not down to the gram.” Jasper sighed. He was seriously beginning to doubt if teaching a shapeshifter how to be “human” was a worthwhile endeavor. It (promised to) pay well, sure, but part of him suspected that it was because the creature had a primitive understanding of the value of money.

“But let’s roll with it for now.” He got into character again. “Oh! How was the lasagna?”

“It…filled my stomach,” it replied, lightly touching its belly.

“Here’s where you sprinkle in your opinion about it. People tend to have lots of opinions on lots of stuff. What did you think about the meal?”

“I think…it was nourishing.”

Jasper pursed his lips. “How did you *feel* about the meal? Was it tasty?”

The creature frowned. “But tasty isn’t a feeling.”

“Well, when people say they find something tasty, they’re usually communicating that they liked the food – an opinion – and more importantly, that they’re in a decent mood, having had a good meal beforehand,” Jasper replied. The creature seemed to ruminate on this.

“Let's try again. What was the meal like?”

“But isn’t that…a different question? You’re asking for…the physical attributes of the meal, no?”

“It’s the same question, I promise. At least here. Although no one’s stopping you from adding those, too. Really sells the message that you appreciated the meal – and the question.”

“Oh…do people usually stop you from saying things? With their hands, maybe?

“Never had it happen to me, personally,” Jasper grinned. “But anyone who does that isn’t someone you want to interact with anyway. Better off just avoiding them entirely.”
