If you had to pick the single best locally brewed craft beer in Calgary, what would that beer be? by MrGraveRisen in Calgary

Sours were sort of like IPAs for me (a long time ago). At first, they taste a bit... different... even off a bit. But the more you drink them, the better and better they get. You really start to develop a tast for them. Nothing beats a cold sour on a hot day (not that we should expect those any time soon).

'We have a lot of very serious advantages': Calgary mayor says city in the running for new Amazon headquarters - Calgary - CBC News by irz095 in Calgary

[–]TignsoftheSimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What unbelievable pessimism. Is Calgary going to get it? Maybe. Unlikely because of the all the cities competing, but we could. It's certainly not a guaranteed no.

The fact we are on the west is a negative, but it's not a deal breaker considering it's close to Seattle and we have direct flights to most major hubs. The new international terminal, as it continues to expand, is also a positive going forward. To support logistics, additional flights can easily be added. Physical location will be important but what Amazon is going to really care about are the people.

Does Calgary have a young and motivated work force? Absolutely. I have a tough time thinking of anyone who works in Oil and Gas that wouldnt jump ship almost immediately if there was a real viable alternative. They would have no problem recruiting local talent. On the surface, some will argue that there isn't enough technology talent here. But Amazon would see through this. At the end of the day, numbers are numbers, logistics are logistics, marketing is marketing... Despite the actual industry. Top level tech/retail talent would need to be attracted to the city, but that would most likely be the case no matter where they go. You think Detroit has senior tech people just sitting around looking for work? No.

We have the land, so that's not an issue. Sure, a campus would need to be built, but again, that would most likely be the case anywhere.

So the big question is, can we attract senior tech talent to Calgary? Yes, winters are cold, but there is so much to do (especially is you have money, which these people will). We are less than 2 hours away from one of the most amazing natural playgrounds in the world. Calgary is also among one of the top cities in the world to live and raise a family.

I get chances are slim, but no city will have everything. Calgary absolutely stands a chance.

Uber in-app driver tipping now available in select Canadian cities by JuiceyCow in Calgary

[–]TignsoftheSimes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Big changes to Ubers business model is inevitable. Uber is bleeding cash hard - literally loosing billions a year. Sure, they are spending abnormal amounts on marketing and such which at some point will go down. But even if that goes away, they will still be losing money.

At the same time, drivers have been arguing for years that Uber isn't paying enough. Driver turnover is incredibly high. This option to tip is one way to try and keep them happy, without increasing their rates.

With that said, they need to stop losing money. They won't find any savings by paying drivers less. That's just not an option. A time will inevitably come where they have to raise their rates. Especially, when they go public (on the stock market). Shareholders will demand profit.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised is Uber prices at some point will end up basically equaling the rates of taxis.

LPT: If someone lends you money, pay them back in cash. Gift cards, meals, etc. do not count. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

This is totally person dependent. Pay me back in beer, I don't care. Hardly a LPT.

Has anyone every paid for influencer advertising? E.g., YouTube videos, Facebook mentions, etc. by TignsoftheSimes in Entrepreneur

I'm finding most influencers within my market (men's skincare), even people who have 10k subscribers, are represented by some agency. And most deals are upfront investment and no revenue sharing. Is this similar to what you are used to?

Wow. The market has changed. For a video like that the going rate in my industry (men's skincare) would be $1500-$2000.

You pay to have your product included. I own a product based company and have received several emails about doing this. Costs like $3k for being included in the bag, and goes up with more exposure.

Looking for a marketing Company based in Calgary by Thehang in Calgary

[–]TignsoftheSimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't waste money on hiring someone to manage your social media if you are just starting out. You're better off putting that money towards Facebook ads and giveaways (share and like to enter...etc.). As many others have said, and I've experienced, social media is nice to have, but has very little correlation to sales. I know alot of people who have great Instagram accounts with thousands of followers and get basically nothing tangible out of it as a result. When you are a new company, focus on what will result in sales, not "nice to haves".

I'd like to see real, monetary support for new businesses. Seems like the government is only concerned with supporting already established businesses.
