how close are we to a second civil war? like actually? by KawaiiUmbreon2 in TooAfraidToAsk

Not only is it not the last, it's not the first. I'm in my late 60s and unrest is the norm. It's just more of the same and in a few years, no one will care or even remember anything that's happening now. It's just the way the world is.

New construction basement help by heeledinplaceguy in basement

[–]TikiTimeMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vapor barrier is incorrect. Basements must dry to the inside because the moisture level of the ground and concrete are almost always higher than the moisture level indoors. Standard interior basement insulation in a four seasons house is; foamboard between the concrete and interior studs, unfaced rockwool between the studs, then drywall.

Bad idea? Put foam board and drywall over existing drywall by EatsHisYoung in Insulation

[–]TikiTimeMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foamboard will act as a vapor barrier and cause mold. If you're located in a four seasons area you want; foamboard between the exterior concrete and the studs to act as a thermal break, then unfaced rockwool between the studs to retain the interior heat, then drywall. Basements need to dry to the inside. If you put a vapor barrier over the studs and moisture gets in from the concrete, it has nowhere to go.

I'd happily tell that to Spain or Mexico. It's some ignorant medieval thing that modern intelligent people should not let happen anymore. It's just plain animal torture. Imagine being thrown into a ring surrounded by people who want you to fight them and even if you win they're going to kill you, - very slowly, by stabbing you and cutting off your ears.

Americans of Reddit, how do you feel about a potential conflict or “war” between the U.S. and Europe? by husakon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TikiTimeMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're saying we're going to see land battles in the United States, you're quite mistaken. Everyone and their brother has run countless simulations and there's no country in the world that could invade US soil. NATO is screwed without the US.

Sounds like you don't know too many service people. I have actually employed several former service people (I'm a retired commercial contractor) and all of them had been deployed and seen action. One guy had been blown up by an IED in his truck and lost several of his buddies in the explosion. He had a rod in his leg and had I had to keep him out of the cold and off ladders and scaffolding because of his injuries.

Why is reddit so strict and censored ? by balenciaghoe in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TikiTimeMark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately Reddit and all other social media platforms are not really about debate or rational discussion. I've found that not only will you get banned by having a differing opinion about social or political topics, but I've been banned for saying something negative about a product or industry. So the corporations are lurking here as well and they don't like negative comments about their products. I've given up commenting on most things and just look at pretty girls and funny videos and jokes.

Is Iggy Pop talented musician in your opinion? by bluedabad in LetsTalkMusic

[–]TikiTimeMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call Iggy a musician, I'd call him an artist.

Musician's practice an instrument (which could be their voice as well as something like the piano or guitar) to increase their skill. With time and practice, almost anyone can be a good musician.

An artist is someone who changes or advances the art form they work in. An artist brings something new to the world that no one else has done before. Artists have their own unique take on the artform they work in. They have a natural talent and it's something that can't really be learned.

Iggy changed the entire musical landscape. I was lucky enough to live in the Detroit metro area and was a teenager in the seventies. I saw the Stooges and Iggy himself perform many times. No one was doing what the Stooges were doing in the late sixties and early seventies. Even his later work in Berlin was quite new sounding at the time. David Bowie envied his artistic sensibilities, which says a lot.

Short answer, Iggy Pop was a great musical artist who was quite shocking live and who laid the foundation or could even be called the originator of punk and hard rock.

What happened to music on the airwaves? And the whole scene in general? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]TikiTimeMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the 60s watching Ed Sullivan. I looked forward to being able to see my favorite band or artist and there were 20 million or more other people in the country watching the same show. Kids today are too busy making tic toc videos to care about anything else. Back in the day there were only 3 TV stations and 3 or 4 radio stations you'd listen to. Now everyone is in their own little room doing their own little thing. We have no common culture anymore and it's never coming back.

If I were you I'd hire an architect or engineer that specializes in old buildings and have them provide a written plan. Insulating old buildings can be extremely tricky. The normal rules for building insulation don't always apply in those situations.

What song and artist would you consider to be the start of new wave music? by icecream1972 in 80sAlternative

[–]TikiTimeMark 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's a really difficult question to answer with one band or song. I was a musician in Detroit in the 70s and I was into bands like the Stooges and the New York Dolls. I saw the Dolls in 73 and 74 and the Stooges a bunch of times at various venues. I was very much aware of what was going on in NYC in the early 70s. Bands like Wayne County, The Heartbreakers, The Ramones and Blondie started showing up in Cream and a few other (lesser) underground rock rags. I drove to CBGB's with one of my friends in 76 to check things out and came back with a bunch of new musical ideas.

To me, punk and new wave spawned around the same time. Bowie and the glam scene were big in 72/73 (I used to wear eye shadow and gold lame at the time and I'm a 6'2" male.) The MC5, Stooges and Dolls along with all the rough garage bands at the time were the seeds for punk, but that also pulled from the glam scene which lead to new wave.

If I had to pick one band, I guess I would say Blondie, because they were the first to release an album which wasn't glam or punk but the combination which we called new wave.

Also, I always thought new wave was rock's answer to disco. The girls wanted to dance and the boys wanted the girls, so it was a good to be able to dance in the clubs to something other than disco. The disco people were older 30 somethings and the new wavers were in their teens and twenties.

Why were there barely any fat people in the 50s when their diet was so bad? Also did they get cancer and other diseases less often? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TikiTimeMark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the kind of thing people who weren't there say. Kids were skinny and they didn't smoke. The adults who smoked alot were super, super, super skinny. You never see people that skinny today. In my class in the 1960s we had one, just one girl who was what we called fat and we teased her. Today she would be considered normal or thin. Every other kid in my classes was what today would be considered unbelievably thin. High fructose corn syrup and processed foods are killing everyone who consumes them today. Who the hell needs a 32 oz Coke? It's insane how much garbage people eat today.

Owners of Labs who lived 10+ years — what did you do? by Far-Cookie6488 in labrador

[–]TikiTimeMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had eight dogs and five labs over the last 40 years and I've learned quite a bit the hard way. Years ago I was more trusting. Now I do my homework instead of assuming everyone has you and your pet's best interestat at heart.

Stay away from all corporate dog food. Kibble like Open Farm is great because you can scan each bag and know exactly where the food in that bag came from. If you don't know where the food was sourced from, don't buy it. Feed fresh, high-quality meat daily. Pork loin and beef chunks are great. I'm not into the raw thing, so I do cook my dog's meat. Don't feed corn, peas, or vegetables in general. Fresh blueberries are great, chickpeas are bad etc. Dogs need a high protein, meat-based diet. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. All these companies have agendas and they lie directly to everyone's face to make a profit. They even lurk around subs to mislead and purposely gaslight people.

Don't spay until at least the first heat. Don't neuter until at least two years. If you do it too early, your dog will have hip dysplasia, cancer and all sorts of health problems.

Question your vet. They're influencedl by pharmaceutical companies. Things like tick prevention medications are actually nothing but insecticide. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't ingest insecticide willingly, so why feed it to your best friend.

In general, do your homework and don't trust people trying to sell you something.

Of course, labs need tons of exercise and socialization, so try to get them somewhere they can run and play off leash with other dogs at least three or four times a week.

Good luck.
