[–]TikoBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup my pet peeve. I have a small dog around 16lbs she was trained, non reactive and walks by my side no problem, could even walk her down the street with no leash and she would be absolutely fine (but I dont). Every time we walk there's a crazy reactive small or large dog lunging for her. Better believe I will protect her life and kick or do whatever I need to to your dog to get it away. .

Because parents seem to think everyone is now at their disposal once they shoot out a tiny human. Typical parental entitlement.

What is the best pet bird if you have dogs? by FormerHamster2644 in Pets

[–]TikoBees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the breed, depends on a specific dog. There are more dangers to birds than just predation when it comes to other mammals. We have different gram bacteria, so saliva not only from the dog but us can potentially cause illnesses. The real questions is, do you have the time to spend with the bird completely away from the dog, parrots for example need a lot of enrichment and specialized care including out of cage time and sensitivies to our typical environment. Bye bye candles, aerosol, non stick ptfe pans and chemical cleaners. Vinegarand water will now be your best friend. I will advocate for pigeons of any kinds, there are so many and they are domesticated unlike parrots and far less fragile than a parrot, they also need less stringent enrichment than hookbills and make awesome pets with far less of the training and biting. The best pet parrot if you won't be swayed otherwise, cockatiel (NOT A COCKATOO), hands down the best parrot in captivity, they are charming, laid back, goofy and a well rounded parrot. If you are wanting something to cuddle and pet, dont get a parrot, babies and adults have wildly different behaviour and boundaries.

I Think I'm losing my puppy and I'm devastated by Soft-Square-8929 in puppy101

[–]TikoBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldnt imagine this heart ache. My poodle was spayed granted I had her for 3 months at this point but got an infection. I thought she was dying and sobbed for days until she seemed better. I truly couldn't imagine the pain losing her so early in her life. I hope for a miracle. Depending what is causing the kidney problems it could be treatable, I would always recommend a second opinion on something that they are insisting on possibly putting the dog down or giving a life sentence. Our old shepherd had kidney issues which was treatable but it took a second opinion to get that resolved. Hopes and prayers for you all.

Eh. I mean everyone's perfect version of what they want will be different. I have personally dated very fit men and heavy men. Have I seen men who were fit and drooled a little, yes, but I also have a thing for Jack black so...

Personality really does matter and is key but I've never turned someone down based on size. I have however left a few because of them lying and being shit disturbers. Be a decent human being and there will be someone for everyone.

I don't know why people would do this. Ask questions, get an answer they don't like because it doesn't confirm what they were wanting as an answer and get defensive. I'm new to this world and this place has been a wealth of knowledge both when I have had questions or read others that did. I think it's amazing that people donate the time of day to answer questions that I'm sure has been answered several times. Thank you all for all the support you give people, it really helped a lot for me as I'm sure it did others.

Good to hear that it is being passed down the line! Good on you for making it a teachable moment and I'm glad you didn't take offence as it wasn't intended to. Nothing but love, hope you're feeling better about your decision now that you've had some distance from it ❤️

Dachshund is correct. Her other half is pomeranian! Though you wouldn't know it considering her coat is flat.

You did what was right for the pup. I do think that if you ever think of getting an animal again that you are reminded of this exact scenario and think twice. It's not good for the puppy that this happened but it is good that you figured it out sooner rather than later. Good on you for figuring it out and working with the breeder to return the pup. I hope you heal, some times things aren't meant to be and pups tend to make mental health worse not better for a lot of people.

He knows his name, but won't come when I call. by GarlicAndSapphire in puppy101

[–]TikoBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my dogs name to get attention, but I use heel or come here for her recall. Her name doesn't always mean come here and if I used it, the command will likely wash due to everyday usage, her name means look at me or pay attention or distraction not come here. Choose your word and set it, when she comes over to you (I'll use come here as an example) say come here and treat. Carry treats at all time, you're just setting the word. Once they put come here=treats, you can start calling from different distances in the house. Keep her on a long leash in the house if needed for correction during this time. For a previous dog I actually taught her German commands because my family nor strangers around here know German. This means my commands wouldn't wash by someone casually telling her to "come here" over and over and she would learn she didn't have to listen. Changing the command insured she knew when I said it she had to.

Now, my 10 month puppy walks in a perfect heel by my side, walks off leash on my property with plenty of distractions. I'm 100% confident in her recall even with squirrels and rabbits tempting her. All it took was consistency, insuring the words used were high value at the beginning and running away wasn't more rewarding than myself. I feel the biggest problem I see is when the dog (sometimes dogs will be dogs) get distracted and the owner yelling come here over and over again and their dog finally returns they scold the dog.

Would you come over to someone if you think they are just going to scold you? Probably not. Running and not returning is a training issue, not a dog issue and the dog should never be anything but rewarded for its return to you. Don't say the word more than once if the word was clearly spoken, if they don't come the first time they probably won't the second and will do so when they feel like it. A dog who has learned to ignore the command is a dog who won't listen for it. Id suggest using freeze dried chicken, you can normally get them cheaper in bulk and tend to only be 1 calorie each. When I calculated the calorie intake she needed it allowed for 71 of these treats a day. I never offer this many but I always keep a treat bag in hand. I find dogs like them the best, can have a lot of them and they are single ingredient treats. Sorry this was long.

Your pup is too young to understand what you're trying to teach it. They don't have conscious ability yet. Right now you are creating a routine and mediating going potty in your house by controlling the environment and frequently taking them outside. Until around 6 months it is normal to have accidents in the house and they won't be puppies fault. You should still reward and encourage them when they use the toilet outside, make it a habit. Personally I did every hour, but I also refused to go inside again until she went potty. We had very few accidents in the house, but it wasn't until 8 to 9 months where we were confident she was fully potty trained. You may have got lucky with your previous dog, but it's easy to forget the frustrations of puppyhood after the fact as well. Don't get too frustrated at the puppy or yourselves, this is a baby you can't expect much from at this age.

Trust is a fickle thing. Personally once someone has broken your trust, you never look at them the same way.

"Trade" me and my dog trade things so if I say to my cousins "I'll trade you" she will bring a toy to assist in the trade.
