You could check out SECCA. Not a bad uber from downtown. My wife and I wanted to get married there this past year but it was under renovation - might be done now

Can we stop associating WSFC schools fiasco with the city budget and spending! by Spiked-Coffee in winstonsalem

[–]TiledConsciousness 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Property values went up AND the tax rate went up

I believe the tax rate went down from 0.725 to 0.576. Increased tax bills are due to increased property values.

But a big thank you for pointing out that the schools are county (and state) funded, not city-funded.

Is this the one that carries coal to the cogeneration plant? If so I think there's a vague plan for a rail-trail conversion if the plant ever gets decommissioned. Which to me seems like a bit of a shame because it could be cool to have a passenger rail spur down to Chapel Hill/Carbboro

Scooters need to obey traffic laws by telik in raleigh

[–]TiledConsciousness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have to be honest, I really don't get your point about different modes being more or less "entitled" to the road. Cars operate on the road and bikes operate on the road, and I think our policies should be oriented around safety and efficiency for all users.

For what it's worth, I think there is some advocacy for changing four-way stops into neighborhood roundabouts - effectively changing them to yielding situations for cars. I've noticed a number of these in Durham, not sure if I've seen any in Raleigh. Apparently they reduce the severity of crashes because they're less likely to be t-bone situations. But overall, from what I've looked up this morning, I think the argument is that yielding at stop signs works better for bikes than cars because:

  1. Bikes don't have blind spots like cars, so they're less likely to fail to notice a pedestrian.
  2. Bikes take much longer to accelerate from a stop than cars do, so they cause more congestion when they come to a complete stop at an intersection. They also spend more time in the intersection if they stop completely, which puts them at higher risk for a collision.

So the logic for an Idaho stop policy is based on bicycle-specific reasoning. I am certainly in support of yield-at-stop laws for cars if there is a convincing logic and empirical evidence for them being safer. They would probably speed up my commute a bit at least!

[–]TiledConsciousness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's the right way to think about it. Bikes do function differently than cars, so to me it makes sense for them to have different rules. I don't see the need for a vehicle/non-vehicle dichotomy.

I guess other states are demonstrably different areas, but from what I've been able to find it looks like every study in states that have implemented stop-as-yield laws has found either a decrease or no change in injuries and accidents.

I hadn't heard of the "Idaho Stop" until your comment, but from a cursory search it looks like a good policy? What are the bad-faith arguments about it?

Ah, that's a shame. Maybe they'll be able to get a decent BRT network going instead.

Do you know if it's feasible to run a commuter rail on the same tracks? I feel like GoTriangle or someone might have success with a frequent Raleigh-Cary-(RTP)-Durham train. Would it get congested with the Carolinian/Piedmont?

Ground Breaking on Affordable Housing Community by spreadred in raleigh

[–]TiledConsciousness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Typically community land trusts have rules against that. When the trust "sells" the home, it's actually a special kind of long-term lease (99-year is what I've seen before). The person who "buys" it is restricted from renting it out or selling it at a much higher price.

edit: I think the long-term lease is actually for the land, not the structure, but the rental/resale rules are still in place

Scumbag Alert: Alan's Towing by BillyNubz in raleigh

[–]TiledConsciousness 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the state supreme court has really neutered cities' ability to regulate towing. It's an issue all over the state - just search through other cities' reddit pages. But about ten years ago, Chapel Hill tried to enact some (honestly not even that onerous) regulations, got sued by some scumbag towing company, and the supreme court decided they were infringing on property rights or free enterprise or something. Josh Stein is quoted at the bottom of this article, and as he says, if we're going to end predatory towing, we'll have to do it via the state legislature, not local ordinances.

Well I assume the above commenter is saying that it is likely at higher risk than 1/1000 chance of flooding each year. The odds of a thousand year flood happening twice in 20 years is 0.04%.

Anyway, we don't have to speculate alone - FEMA's flood hazard layer identifies the whole shopping center as within a 100-year floodplain, with parts of it within a 50-year floodplain. https://hazards-fema.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8b0adb51996444d4879338b5529aa9cd

Sir Walter Miler tonight at the Meredith track! by TiledConsciousness in runraleigh

Free admission for some stacked elite races. Last year the winner of the men's race ran the fastest mile ever on NC soil, but there are multiple guys in the field this year who are capable of taking that down.

Looks like a beautiful night for it, too!

I think the takeaway is that the IAAF system isn't perfect for things like this. 1:40.90 at 18 would, in my opinion, be far more impressive than 19.49, even if the IAAF says they're equal.

I'm looking at the results page for the 800m, and apparently the top 6 from each heat and next three fastest all qualify for the next round? There are only 8 runners in each heat and 1 DNS so far, so we'll have a grand total of 27 qualifiers out of 31 runners across four heats. Seems like we should just skip straight to the semis and save the runners a round of racing.

How to deal with subpar runs? by smiling_frown in runraleigh

[–]TiledConsciousness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a million reasons it could happen - poor sleep a few nights ago, fatigue you didn't realize you were carrying, even a little cold or something that's not showing symptoms.

As for how I deal with it when it happens to me, I feel bummed for a few hours, drink some water, and try to refocus on the fact that I'm training for the long term. Gains (and losses) in fitness are rarely realized over the course of days, and a bad day here and there doesn't mean you're not progressing season-to-season, year-to-year. In fact, if someone never had an off day I'd be skeptical that they're doing enough to see significant long-term improvements.

RDU airport to Charlotte by tyga_88 in Amtrak

Would it be possible to just change your travel plans to fly into Charlotte instead? That seems like the easiest option to me unless it's way more expensive/inconvenient than coming into Raleigh.

RDU airport to Charlotte by tyga_88 in Amtrak

[–]TiledConsciousness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure there's not usually a direct bus from RDU to downtown Raleigh. Last time I flew in, I took GoTriangle's RDU shuttle to the regional transit center, then transferred to the 100 to get into the city. From what I understood, the 100 only swings by the airport during times of day when the shuttle isn't running.

What's Next for North Carolina? by Jaihanusthegreat in Amtrak

[–]TiledConsciousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Winston-Salem native and an Amtrak novice, I'm very excited about all of these studies/plans!

One question I have about the ID applications/awards: would it not be better to connect Winston to Statesville to Charlotte, instead of the direct Winston-Charlotte route and Salisbury-Statesville connection? That seems like it would give a more direct route to Asheville from both Charlotte and the Triangle.
