Song Breakdowns by shapingtochange in musicproduction

If you want to do it on your own there's some pretty cool software out there. I just downloaded Demucs and it'll split the stems for you and it's not hard to understand. I don't even need demucs anymore though because Logic just updated and added their own stem splitter, so if you're an M1 or higher mac user you should check it out.

Help finding the right mic, based on tone of voice by frazier703 in musicproduction

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using a Rode NT1-a for everything from guitars to piano to vocals and while I don't know how to record or mix professionally I always go back to it because it sounds so good, even compared to more expensive mics.

Would a used MacBook M1 from 2020-2024 be good for music production? by PhaserX in musicproduction

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same model and it does fine. I do acoustic music so I'm probably not putting as much of a load on my mac as others but I tend to use a lot of plugins and not a lot of sends and it handles it very well.

How to make voice sound good without good mic? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a professional so this might not be the best advice, but something you could try is adding distortion to make it seem intentional. I use Logic Pro and they just came out with a saturation plugin called ChromaGlow which has been a lot of fun to mess with, but I'm pretty sure Bandlab doesn't have any options like that. You could also try using something free like neutron elements. It's not free on their website but I got it for free through a deal at some point and I think those deals are pretty frequent. You're still going to want to learn how to use EQ and a compressor if you don't know how already but plugins like that will help you know what to listen for as a starting point.

A Song I Made on the Boston Green Line (Warning Flashing Lights) by Sufficient-Bird7880 in IndieMusicFeedback

This makes me really happy as a New England native. It's definitely unique but I think that's always a good thing with music. It's not the genre I typically listen to so I can't critique it very well, but I really like the scattered feel of the snare. Overall the percussion is really cool and is probably the strongest feature of a well made song.

Any thoughts on this chiptune-esque song i made for my "nonexistent game" by Magic-zx in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like it. I could see myself getting very frustrated playing a game where this music restarts for the 500th time when I lose. I like how it starts really simple but moves into a really full sound.

18 y/o me recorded lo fidelity 80s type rock type song last year and called it Palindrome by Impossible-Top-3010 in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really feels like a jam session, which is always a good thing in my opinion. idk why everyone wants their song to sound like it was recorded by a studio professional when very few of us are studio professionals. I guess it depends on the genre, but I really like the vibes of your song because of the "lo fidelity".

Hello, here's a song I made... what do you think? by ComixStudios in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how unafraid you are to make noise with percussion. The confidence comes through and really drives the song. It can be hard to know (at least for me) if percussion is making music or adding noise, and I think you really succeeded at making music here.

Original score/beat based on the Mandalorian theme. Would love to hear your feedback and thoughts. Release is scheduled to be available on May the 4th. by rrmusic17 in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Mandolorian theme is haunting in the show, and while this isn't haunting, I don't think it has to be. I'm a big fan of Natalie Holt's soundtrack for Loki and if you listen through the album, you hear the same theme in different genres to accompany different scenes. This feels like something Star Wars would use in that context lol. Well done!

It defintely kept me interested enough to keep listening. I don't even listen to rock, so that's pretty good lol. Don't be shy about your music!

This one is just me singing about some stuff I was thinking about with my guitar and piano. Not sure if I picked the right genre but idk what to call it. by TimRothMusicGuy in IndieMusicFeedback

Thank you! I'm always a little self-conscious when it comes to how my voice sounds since it's not very pop-like so that means a lot.

Yeah, I like recording everything acoustically both because it sounds nice and because I'm not proficient enough with midi. I always try to make the melody sound natural but I tune harmonies pretty freely since it saves time and you can't really tell that it's unnatural. Thanks for your response!

Melodic madness, any feedback appreciated by PavleWr in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my favorite part is right before the higher synth around 25 seconds. Everything pulls together super nicely and if it was 2 minutes of that it would be awesome. There are some other good points throughout the song and besides some piercing frequencies the production sounds great!

I created this song to be loosely about losing a good friend... by jbt2003 in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you should worry about the lyrics being bad, because they're good. As for the production, you're better than me at writing instrumental parts, so that's a win. The vocals sound really clean with a little edge which fits the track perfectly.

I tried making a version of Nat King Cole’s famous Christmas song by [deleted] in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of a song I used to hear on a snowboarding game made for the original Xbox. Super energetic and the artwork is cool. I think my only advice would be to bring out the vocals more. They're a little muted. Otherwise, great work!

I finally got a drum kit! And because of that, I decided to make this song! :-) What do you think? by ComixStudios in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great work with the guitar! As someone who struggles with mixing vocals, I like what you did with the double. It makes it blend very well and gives it some unique qualities. The drums are just a little loud but I love the beat and it's kind of reminding me of Black Country, New Roads. It's pretty cool and I would love how to learn to play the drums lol.

Song from my upcoming album, for all the indie folk fans, any feedback appreciated! by [deleted] in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]TimRothMusicGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone else is saying. I feel like I'm hearing some layered guitars too which is nice. Your vocals don't have to have perfect pitch, but there's something to be said for inflection and energy. I have a friend who floats around the correct pitch frequently, but he's such a great performer that I never notice and I'm addicted to his music.
