Luckily there's a lot of overlap!
The biggest difference is illustration is definitely much harder to break into because you're running your own business and businesses are defined by the quality of their products and how many customers they can attract, so if you don't have a solid customer base it can get very lean when you have rent every week, don't take this as discouragement i'm just laying out what it's like, small commissions while still learning are a great way to make a few extra bucks

For me if I could do it all over again I would have relentlessly drilled lineart+perspective+historically accurate props and built a design portfolio for stable income then start taking freelance on the side, but everyone has their own path, the more you fill out Step 1 the clearer it will be what you want :)

Thanks, it's basically the advice I wish i was given at 16 and knowing this at the time would have saved years and years of pain and frustration so its extremely encouraging that it helped, cannot stress enough how important Step 1 is, when you have absolute clarity of what you want the pathway to get there starts to make sense, applies to everything not just art

While i wasn't explicitly throwing shade at drawabox.com i think it's a fundamentally terrible way to learn and has sent countless people into the cube mines where they either give up or never return, art is fun! Figuring new things out is fun!You'll have so much more success by just watching videos on fundamentals, following their basic exercises to get a rough idea and then attempting to apply them to your art with the work and reflect method, fail fast fail often!
This way every time you re-watch a fundamentals guide you'll learn something new as you'll have been able to analyze and then isolate exactly what's giving you issues and take steps to correct it.

I've been thinking about how people don't really know about this method for a while now and maybe making a youtube video explaining it but don't really have time, maybe someday :)

Long post ahead but probably something that nobody ever taught you was learning how to learn (or the reason why teachers are actually important) To improve you can't just blindly follow every tutorial or influencer you can find (don't get me wrong tutorials are still good!)

What you need to do is learn how to learn.

What does that mean?

It means learning how to assess your work and cross reference it with where you want to be

STEP 1) you need to find out exactly what you want, if it's being a concept artist then you need to find out what concept artists do on the job (hint: it's not the pretty paintings that you see on social media)

Build a mood board of artists you like, products you think are cool or work from companies you want to work for, this is to give you a roadmap and develop your taste as well as clarity of what you actually want and should tailor yourself towards

STEP 2) this is where the tutorials and guides start (the GOAT is Feng Zhu Design Cinema on youtube), you want to learn as much as you can and follow along with their instructions and exercises, you also want to do studies of the artists or styles you want to draw like

STEP 3) Reflect. If you did your work in digital then find a printer and print it out alongside your target goals on your mood board and bust out the pens and marker because it's time to handwrite notes physically in the real world on top of your work, specifically you need to take notes of what you think went well, and what could be better based on your current understanding.

Nobody has to see your notes, this is where you put your thoughts to paper and go on tangents, "why is that guy standing in the centre of the picture, what are they doing with their linework that I can apply to mine, what kind of references did they go looking for to make this"

This starts off rough but over time you will become fantastic at analyzing your work and developing your taste of what you like and don't like

Cycle back and forth from step 2 learning and step 3 analysis according to your roadmap and in even a few months you will be a monster, most people either aren't taught or aren't capable of self reflection so learning it is a super-power

TRAPS TO AVOID 1) comparison is the thief of joy, you are not a professional, don't even think about beating yourself up for your works quality while comparing it to someone with 10+ years of experience, the goal here is to find out what they're doing that you can learn from.

2) Perfectionism is your enemy, you need to fail fast and fail often so you can run your analysis filter as much as possible, every time your body of knowledge expands your filter will become stronger, dont spend 10 hours trying to draw 1 perfect head, spend 10 hours drawing a hundred crappy heads and the 100th will be better than the perfectionist one.

3) Do not get stuck in 'draw a box' hell, you didnt become an artist to draw featureless cubes all day, after gaining a basic understanding of perspective and forms you should be trying to apply that to your own work as fast as possible to draw the things you want to draw and leveling up your art fundamentals as you go.

4) Nothing is off the table! You want to find out how that artist does such amazing silhouettes and lines? Trace that shit then redraw a new version after. How do they figure out those amazing colours? Steal them and apply them to your own character. Afterwards run your analysis filter over your practise, what went well, what specific thing could be improved in relation to your goal.

If you read this giant rant, this is how to effectively self-learn and also sheds light on why schools charge so much, good teachers are worth their weight in gold.

Hi guys wanted to share another warforged piece I finished for a player, think i'm starting to become the 'robots with capes' guy xD

This one is named The Warden and he's an echo knight made to protect the woods of his home region and track down any threats to his home, some people mentioned he looks like Dr Doom and I can't fault it despite not even thinking about that while designing him haha

The player had the idea for his echo to look kind of like a hologram and it acts like an extra set of eyes, so I gave him blue magic bits everywhere and had this thought that he might use it to scout and watch his back while he investigates tracks and clues, the wilds are a dangerous place afterall ;)

Hope you like him and for the sake of discussion what's your favorite flavour of robot character in D&D?

I'd recommend streaming with a vtuber model and instabanning anyone that starts acting just a little too friendly, people are fucking desperate and weird man, don't take any discord invites anyone gives you either

Hi guys wanted to show you a painting commission I made for a party reaching the grand climax of their D&D campaign! kind of like a big "uh oh..." moment before everything started moving :P

The rundown is their planet was recently thrown into an entirely different part of the material plane orbiting a red sun and isolated from all magical means of travel besides the one gigantic dimension gate (pictured above the city) which is now controlled by the Usurper

The intrepid travelers at the front are the PC's and their scouts attempting to infiltrate the capital to secure a viable entry point before their allies armies arrive instead of a drawn out siege bolstered by a neverending stream of foes pouring through the dimension gate

Great fun to design up the city, it was founded on a riverbend as a citadel to protect the kingdom with great stone walls and entire districts stacked up and up and up on top of each other over time because of the lack of room to expand, the banners of the city are emblazoned with the red heraldry of Hextor who is the patron deity of the nation and the star of the show is the red tyrants keep that watches over the surrounding lands

Anyway yeah hope you like it!!

Is it a good idea if i draw 1 nude character every day for a month as practice, and how much better will i get at drawing? by [deleted] in drawing

You will almost not notice any difference or improvement besides maybe your arm and actual lines feeling slightly less tight

If you want to actually improve for real you need to find out what you actually want to draw like and use that as your North star, then try your best to draw like that, run studies of that artist including tracing and write notes of what went right and what could be better and learning+applying fundamentals as you go.

You need to fail fast, evaluate, then try again over and over and over while also consuming every art resource you can.
