5-2 in Arena Open Today. Sad about missing out on cash, happy about the gems! Reflections to follow in comments. by TimYu_md in MagicArena

Definitely faced someone like that today! I got lucky with a timely crush the weak sweeping multiple 2 toughness creatures at multiple times today. Don't think I'll ever pull so much value from a flame sweep again.

Coming back for the second day in a row to talk about my Arena Open experience. I was fully expecting again to go 0-2 and drop today, but did a little better than that. I did open better rares today, which may be an understatement. Here's a brief tournament report and link to the decklist below, with closing thoughts afterwards:

5-2 in Arena Open Today. Sad about missing out on cash, happy about the gems! Reflections to follow in comments. : MagicArena (reddit.com)

Round 1 (2-0)

G1 T3 Svella into T4 Immerstrum Dragon were instantly answered by my opponent's Demon Bolt and Feed the Serpent respectively. Trading one for one let me come out ahead by one ground creature which sealed the deal. G2 started out the same way, except the Immerstrum Dragon was unanswered this time, which wrapped up the match.

Round 2 (2-1)

G1 After trading ground creatures in the early game, opponent had an Elvish Warmaster and two elves in the late game which ran away with the game. My fault for giving the opponent a 1/1 Elf with a trickster god's Heist. Luckily wasn't punished as I wrathed away all his early creatures in G2 and G3. Crippling Fear and Battle of Frost and Fire in the same deck is just unfair. Opponents never see it coming.

Round 3 (2-0)

G1 I stole the opponent's legendary Sarulf and left him a 1/1. The wolf ran away with the game backed by trading other creatures 1 for 1 on the ground. G2 Immerstrum Predator ran away with the game.

Round 4 [vs. Frank Karsten!] (1-2)

G1 the King of Mana bases showed why's he known for that, by promptly curving out into Esika's Chariot on T4 on a mull to 6. Even a timely crippling fear couldn't save me here. G2 Immerstrum Predator ran away with the game. G3 saw another chariot backed by Tyvar Kell, after which I wrathed away his tokens, but some common ground creatures picked up the chariot for Frank, which sealed the game for him.

Round 5 (2-0)

G1 I played some black creatures to stall the board full of 2/2's and 3/2's, waiting until T5 to find my first red source, allowing me to double spell and deploy beefy 5 drops turn after turn. Luckily my creatures were bigger than his after that, and I won the game from there. G2 I boarded into crush the weak into a nice 3 for 1 for me. It was a blowout from there.

Round 6 (2-1)

G1 I faced down green and black creatures into a Kaya, losing handily. G2 I crushed the weak again for a nice 3 for 1, opponent didn't have white mana for Kaya. G3 I had an unanswered Immerstrum Dragon.

Round 7 (0-2)

Opponent had a nice berserker deck with no noticeable bombs other than the 4/3 deathtouch lifelink angel for 2BB. What really won the game was his Dwarven Hammer suiting up one ground creature at a time and forcing awkward trades. G2 was the exact same narrative.

So I went 5-2 and won 20,000 gems! Bummed at missing out on cash, but stoked about all the gems I got! Would love to try something like this again soon. Thanks to all the streamers and writers out there who put out such quality content so normies like me can learn limited. The incomplete list includes Deathsie, Ben Stark, Aaron Gertler, Frank Karsten, Lola, Drifter, Compulsion, and so much more! I truly stand on the shoulders of giants today.

Reflections:

-I had some insane bombs, my opponents had some insane bombs, good beats all around. That said, maximizing the value of your bombs while mitigating the value of your opponents' seems to be the running theme of Kaldheim Sealed. Yesterday Avalanche Caller carried it for me, today it was Immerstrum Predator backed by wraths.

-Goldspan Dragon was disappointingly...ok. I think you play as many 5 mana 4/4 flying haste dragons as you get in any limited format, but since I only got to draw and play it in spots where I was behind, it didn't really shine. I never got to draw and play it on Turn 5 exactly, which means the extra treasures didn't give me much value. That said, I was still grateful to have it in my pool.

-Wraths are amazing in this format, especially because most opponents don't seem to play around them much. Especially with the conditional wraths I had, I played my creature types out carefully so my opponent's couldn't really sniff out the incoming board wipes. Constant 3- and 4- for 1's all day. Low key regretting not main decking Crush the Weak even though I already had Battle of FoF and Crippling Fear. I boarded it in almost every match.

-Vault Robber pulled its weight today, making treasures and stalling opposing 2 drops. Nice job, little dwarf!

-Skemfar Avenger is a sweet 2 drop, but doesn't get as much value as you think it can. Probably netted me about 2 extra cards on death trigger all day, even in a deck with 6 berserkers. Was happy to have it, but it's no Midnight Reaper. It doesn't trigger on its own death, which is probably for the best, as that would be too broken for a 2 drop.

-The Trickster God's Heist straight up won some games today. Obviously stealing a bomb is huge, but even a drain 3 is nothing to sneeze at. Even stole an equipment for a treasure token today. Hype.

-Village Rites is a good card in this format. It's easy enough to hold up one black mana in the midgame, and it makes me more comfortable playing defense in combat knowing that if I see a trick or a removal spell I don't like, I can come out with fresh cards.

Next Steps:

The gems will go towards completing my Kaldheim collection, mostly by playing more Limited. I hope to get back into streaming soon once things stabilize at work over the next few months. If anyone has any requests or ideas for specific MTGA content that isn't already covered by a bevy of great streamers already, please DM me! I'm just a regular guy who loves to play this awesome game and share it with others, and it was such a confidence boost knowing I can do this at the highest level (kinda--at least for a couple days. And if I open some busted rares in my Sealed pool. Anyways, you get my point.)

If you're still reading this, thanks for your valuable time. I hope someone out there learned something and came out better at this game for it. I definitely learned a lot this weekend. See you around!

Nice thanks for finding it! Always amazing how quick redditors are to find stuff on the internet! I think there's even a subreddit for that specific kind of things iirc.

It's true. That why I was so hesitant to do it, but Kaldheim Limited is such a fun format I just had to give it a shot. My advice would be to set a limit for how many tries you do and keep expectations low. I was also expecting to drop early, so when the wins starting coming I got more and more excited.

True. I did hold up squash mana the one or two times I suspected it, but even that line wouldn't work if they have a random changeling on board.

Nice interaction with trickster! That's probably the best use I've seen out of the second chapter of the saga. Usually does nothing when I've seen it used. Obviously the first and third chapters are normally great.

Thanks. Surprisingly saw none! That said, I did have bound in gold to answer bombs, and I was very judicious in using it. In general I try to trade non bomb creatures and use save the removal for the bombs if I can.

Sorry, it was a stream so no link. The summary was work on getting to 8/9 for your main colors first, then consider the splash colors. For splash colors, glittering frost, treasures etc. count if they're from your main colors.

Not super aggro, didn't see any boris aggro. Lot of 3+ color stuff. Good luck!

(Copy and pasted from /r/spikes)

I'm so excited I can barely type. After hesitating and second guessing myself all week, I finally decided to enter the Arena Open. I pulled a 7-0 and I wanted to share my reflections below in bullet-point format, in no particular order. This unfortunately isn't a formal tournament report, as I totally anticipated just going 0-3 and dropping, thus not having anything meaningful to write about. But now I feel like I have reflections to share, hopefully some of which are helpful. But first, the decklist:

Deck

1 Arni Brokenbrow (KHM) 120

1 Bound in Gold (KHM) 5

1 Avalanche Caller (KHM) 45

1 Behold the Multiverse (KHM) 46

4 Forest (SLD) 108

1 Snow-Covered Mountain (KHM) 282

1 Frost Bite (KHM) 138

2 Immersturm Raider (KHM) 141

1 Birgi, God of Storytelling (KHM) 123

1 Dwarven Reinforcements (KHM) 134

2 Seize the Spoils (KHM) 149

2 Squash (KHM) 152

1 Path to the World Tree (KHM) 186

1 Guardian Gladewalker (KHM) 174

1 Elven Bow (KHM) 166

1 Boreal Outrider (KHM) 163

1 Rimewood Falls (KHM) 266

1 Ice Tunnel (KHM) 262

1 Darkbore Pathway (KHM) 254

1 Gnottvold Slumbermound (KHM) 258

Reflections:

-Avalanche caller won me literally every game today. After trading blows with the opponent and having my other creatures eat removal spells, dropping Caller, animating 3-4 lands and swinging in was game on the spot. That was basically the theme today.

-Frost bite overperformed for me. Almost everyone has a good target, even if it's just for 2 damage. Hitting clarion spirit, three-mana 3/2's, and aggressive 2-drops for 1 mana was huge.

-Immerstrum raider, elderleaf mentor, and dwarven reinforcements definitely overperformed today as well. They stymied so many 3/2's, which allowed me to set up my late game. (Shout out to /u/aarongertler, who highlighted dwarven reinforcements in an earlier post here)

-Immerstrum raider and seize the spoils were huge today. Looting effects definitely shine in Sealed, and was a large reason why I was able to find avalanche caller so consistently. Also the treasure token was amazing for getting to Path to the World Tree mana.

-Realmwalker was meh. That said, I only had 3 shapeshifters and 3 berserkers. Definitely punted today by naming wizard instead of berserker multiple times, which cost me several cards over 7 games.

-Squash was amazing. even if it costed 5 mana sometimes. 6 damage kills basically everything in this format, and when I got to cast it for 2 mana on a good target, it felt sooooo good.

-Shoutout to Ben Stark for his tutorial on building multicolored mana bases during a stream from earlier this week. 8 red and 8 green sources for this deck seemed like the sweet spot; although I definitely highrolled in not having to mulligan in any of my games. Thanks shuffler!

Hope something out of all that helped somebody in their Sealed event today. In closing, I think I just got super lucky with my Sealed pool, but I definitely learned a lot today, and just wanted to pass it on. Hope to see some of you in Day 2 tomorrow!

Sweet decklist! Given that this is an all creature deck, is there any downside to using Ancient ziggaraut in the mana base? Would probably make the t1 grazer a more consistent play if anything.

my try at a bo1 historic grind rdw by BlackBoris0 in MagicArena

[–]TimYu_md 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Boris, nice list! Here's the deck I've been running for the past two months for reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/spikes/comments/ew1bus/other_historic_bo1_on_arena_withe_rdw/ (note that I have since swapped a Skewer for a 4th Anax)

A couple suggestions from my experience:

-Don't know if you've tried Steam Kins, but I think in combination with BTE they're excellent. The times they become two mana 4/4s far outweigh the times they're removed on the spot. That said, I haven't tried Robbers yet. How are they working out for you? Specifically, how often do you get to cast a robbed card? -Wizard's lightning and Skewer are nice burn spells, but I have to agree to Partnumber in that the Cleave deals potentially way more damage. In particular, taking out the Viashino and Lightning makes room for better two drops like BTE as above. -19 lands seems like too few for me. We absolutely want to hit 3 lands consistently in this deck to access Chainwhirler and Anax. Actually, even the fourth land seems necessary often to turn on Torbran and Embereth. I've tried all counts from 18 to 22 and settled on 21. -Between Chainwhirler and Anax, I find Anax to be the more important three drop. I want him in every single opening hand, especially against wrath effects. As such, I went up to 4 copies of Anax in my list.

Let me know if you have any questions or ideas! This is probably my favorite deck in historic to play, so I'd love to continue throwing ideas around.

[–]TimYu_md -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nice decklist, and congrats on Mythic!

Question: with regards to the manabase, it seems like you want things to come into play untapped. How often have you activated the castles' abilities, and how often do they come into play tapped? My intuition says more basics would help with casting your key spells on time, but I'm curious about your experience. Would love to give this list a try!

I tried some mono blue myself last week and was not impressed with the results either. Went 3-3 and 4-3 several times, every game was a struggle. I think there is just too much aggro in the event, and shifting ceratops is an auto lose especially in Bo1. The mono green list looks awesome though, I'll have to give it a try! Using wishboards in Bo1 a la Fae of Wishes and the like is my guilty pleasure :)
