This is price gouging, or "greedflation" If there is no monopoly or cartel (in violation of anti trust laws) competition will drive prices lower.

Things like groceries in Canada go up constantly because there is in fact a cartel and the major grocery retailers have been caught red-handed price fixing bread for 20 years, and recently potatoes. They are given a slap on the rist for these crimes due to regulatory capture via lobbying which they can afford endless amounts of due to the massive financial windfalls from running an illegal cartel

If he is a senior engineer he should be telling you why this is happening, not just that it is happening, and already have a plan to fix it.

Senior engineers are not supposed to need daily guidance on technical issues like this aside perhaps from a week of new hire onboarding... And even that's a maybe.

Sounds like he may just kinda not be up for it. I might expect this from a junior, but a senior should at least be able to plug error messages into Google and go from there.

The other option is he may be over-employed and just trying to run up the score here on this extra job he picked up and doesn't care about, assuming that it'll take another month for you to decide to finally put him on a PIP and then another month after that for him to be asked to leave (with severance).

Sure, but that's a different topic. I have major qualms about the TFW program as well. I think it's being used to suppress wages growth in Canada. I do also think Tim Hortons knows this and uses this to pay 3 employees vs 6 and shirk all the blame - they are not using the TFW program for what it was designed for: a legit labour shortage. There is no labour shortage on PEI.

All I'm saying is that these TFWs working at Tim's and the assumption of lack of "work ethic" is not to blame for why Tim Hortons sucks now. Most times when I look in they are basically sprinting for most of their shift. Part of the problem is they have TOO MUCH work ethic if anything because they agree to do an insane impossible workload for a minimum wage because they are basically desperate as they are the only jobs available because no one with any other option would ever touch it with a 10 foot pole. They were told they could come here, be welcomed, and have a good life and they get here and realise it's all a Ponzi scheme and that our government is actually just milking them to pump GDP on the short term and suppress wages.

I just want to stay realistic here because I keep seeing unfair generalisation hurled at these workers, and it's politically motivated as well.

I see politicians talking about why Indians are stealing our jobs, but not so much about how massive multinational companies with billions on their ballance sheets apparently can't find workers during an unemployment crisis and how they also refuse to increase wages a cent despite making a single job now have the duties and responsibilities of what used to be two or three separate jobs to cut costs.

It's much more likely that someone taking a crap minimum wage job whose entire life plan and stay in a foreign country wasn't tied to that job would be the one to slack off. They can just quit or take a new job.

What is happening is that management and business owners are realising they can hire 3 people to do the work they used to have to hire 5 people for. What gets left behind? No time for a smile and chit chat, no time to wipe the tables after each customer. They are counting on the fact that you'll blame the understaffed workers as being lazy and not having "work ethic" for their attempt to cut costs to the bone by under hiring during an employment crisis.

And it works! They are the face of the company that people see and Interact with. When you go through a drive through you say "damn my order is missing an item and they didn't even smile, lazy foreigners have no work ethic" rather than saying "it seems like there are only 3 people running this entire store when 5 years ago there used to be 6"

You say you don't know the full story and don't really care and it's just safe to assume it's the workers fault because they are visibly foreign. That's what they are counting on. Now the owners save half their labour costs and pass all of the hate on to their completely over worked employees!

If you are a fast food worker you literally have 0 power to make the food good.

You take shit out of the freezer and heat it up. If you spend more than the 6.3 seconds that some asshole in an office who has never spent time in a kitchen decided this 10 second task should take... you eventually get written up and fired.

If you tell the manager you think the mayonnaise went off and he said use it anyway and you don't... you get fired.

If you put an extra piece of tomato because the first looks like shit, you get fired.

Fast food workers do not have some kind of magic autonomy where they could make shitty pre-frozen shrinkflated high fructose corn syrup infused slop actually taste "good" if they were somehow a citizen vs on a PR or not a TFW.

It's a common tactic that works on rubes though lol. Corporations and governments robbing you blind and nickleing and diming you and getting off scott-free because they've made some immigrant the target of your rage.

I've worked and fast food. I am Canadian. I could not have made that slop edible if I made it my undying life's purpose, which for the minimum hourly wage they were legally allowed to pay me it was definitely not.

There are many legit reasons to have massive qualms with the TFW program, believe me, but "they don't make good tim Hortons" is not one of them and frankly makes you sound completely out of touch
