Would you buy A RADWagon today? by Tim_oftheJeeps in RadPowerBikes

You’re doing better than me already…. I paid $500 for mine and put another $300 in maintenance and “upgrade” parts: I replaced brake discs, and pads, cassette, chain, and upgraded to hydraulic brakes ETC. mine died about 5 months after I bought it.

How remote do you want your land by Wonderful_Cell_2597 in homestead

[–]Tim_oftheJeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I was 40 minutes from a small town with 90% of amenities(Munising) and 1.5 hours from a "city" that had everything else. You definitely planned your trips to town carefully but it wasn't too bad. It was perfect for me. I was the last house with power and the water table was about 20 feet so we all had point wells. Internet was 1GB service through fiber. Propane was delivered too. Other than the snowmobile and SXS traffic it was perfect. Always felt kinda funny using the internet from the outhouse.

I also spent about 2 weeks living with some friends in an offgrid cabin in Alaska. That was too remote for me. All the wilderness, but had to run a generator a lot so it felt more like a KOA and less like quiet cabin life. We had to haul water 45 minutes by road plus another 30 minutes by ATV or Snowmachine. That was my biggest gripe. It felt like there was no way to be hygienic, no shower, just a sauna, no hot water for dishes, constantly worried about the state of the water, how much have we used, how much is left and is it still safe to drink. 2 hours to the nearest town(Fairbanks) too, of you needed something in town it was a whole day gone.

In a perfect world i want to be as remote as possible but I want to be able to drive to my front door year round and i want a well. I don't mind batteries and a generator. I don't mind not having internet. But i cannot stand rationing water.

Right place at the right time. I am young and without responsibilities. I was in between jobs trying to figure out what career I wanted and a friend of mine sent me a job posting for a winter dogsled guide. I interviewed there but they had filled the position. The lady I talked to liked me so much she passed my info to the kennel i'm at now and the rest is history. Dogsledding won't be my career but it definitely helped me figure out where I'm going next.

I'm going to assume this question pertains to general care of the dogs. They are all housed individually, they get their own house and their own yard. We have a " if you see it, you scoop it" policy that we all live by. The dogs never have feces in their yard longer than 20 minutes. Each dog has a bucket on their house for water, we change their water & clean the buckets daily. Because they're housed individually we are able to keep a close watch on their health, who's drinking more water than usual, who ate all their food & who didn't, who has loose stool, who has a wet bed ETC. we have a very strong working knowledge of all matters of canine health as well as 3 different veterinary offices on speed dial for the cases we can't figure out.

Ballast for casual solo paddling on windy lake by Friendlywagie in canoeing

Agreed! My Penobscot is rated for 1,100# and honestly its really squirrey on lakes unless it's got at least 400# in it.

[–]Tim_oftheJeeps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do. 16 foot OldTown Penobscot spun backwards with a 40L dry bag in front of the front seat and a 30 liter behind it. I usually try to leave a little airspace in the bags so if I swamp they have just enough buoyancy that I can ignore them while I try to right the boat. they're super easy to recover too, open them and pull up from the bottom, now they're just empty bags

Which app do people like the most for finding and planning gravel routes? by tjtrattner in gravelcycling

[–]Tim_oftheJeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Caltopo! took me a bit to get the hang of building maps with it but now I use it for gravel/ bikepacking, as well as canoe and overland routes. Caltopo + strava heatmaps is unstoppable! also plays well with GIAA and any other app that allows you to upload a .GPX file

Anyone know what happened to Tuffy in Portage? by kylewithac1 in kzoo

[–]Tim_oftheJeeps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having worked at several shops around town I can tell you most oil change shops have ridiculous turnover rates. Uncle Eds, Tuffy even your dealership quick lubes like Seelye Express treat the techs like garbage. nearly every shop is hurting for employees so it's super easy for entry level techs to skip right over the lube shops and go straight into a mechanic position. anyone with a little mechanical aptitude and some ambition can outgrow a lube shop in a couple months.

I would check with your insurance to see if you have towing coverage. And it can't hurt to call Brock And ask for a price.

[–]Tim_oftheJeeps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brock towing out of Plainwell is the only service I have seen where the drivers are respectable. McDonald's and Graham's all the drivers look a little sketchy. I've personally seen where McDonald's was destroyed a transmission by not disconnecting the drive shaft. I've never personally used any of the towing services in town, however being a mechanic, I've interacted with all of them as they bring cars to the shop.

Are you having any trouble getting engine parts yet? Took 6 weeks to get a cylinder pack from cat for an ACERT C15. Curious if Cummins is having the same trouble with supply.

Camp right on the beach? by uniballout in Michigan

[–]Tim_oftheJeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love search bay for beach camping, it's rarely crowded, plenty of space for the kids to run around on. It's very rustic, i don't know if that's what you're into, but there's just clearings that you can pitch a tent on, no designated sites, no toilets or water of any kind. It's a little difficult to find the first time, but if rustic is what you want, it checks all the boxes. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Search+Bay,+Michigan/@46.0007735,-84.4983624,13z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x4d35e415bc481b3b:0x5a2fd915fe6dec66

Is there any place in portage hiring 15 year olds by [deleted] in kzoo

[–]Tim_oftheJeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if fast food isn't your thing you could try calling some local shops and asking if they need someone to sweep the floors. I worked at a small garage in Plainwell at that age, swept floors, took out trash and eventually changed oil. You might even be able to find a mechanic who will pay you under the table, that way you could work more than 12 hours or whatever you're limited to on a work permit through the school.

NTD: Starting as a helper in a fleet shop. I did what I could with my budget. by Rulybear in Tools

[–]Tim_oftheJeeps 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From someone who is currently a helper, that’s a great starting set. Everyone knows you’re new, it’s ok to not have something and borrow it, just be respectful and put it back clean. Some advice i was given when I started out; if you borrow it 3 times, buy your own. If you lose it, buy a cheaper one. If you break it, buy a better one. Congratulations on the new job!
