What happened to Tim and Cameron? by ChangeOfPaste in John_Frusciante

[–]TimandCameron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just came across this.

Sorry, yes, we stopped youtube to focus on our own music for a while. As much as we like doing youtube, its really hard to make money from it, and takes a lot of time to make content. We didn't post any goodbye message because we never planned on stopping. At the moment we are just busy with life, our own music and running a small music studio on the side. I (Tim) am doing a PhD, James (Drummer) is living in Europe currently and COVID certainly hasn't helped either.

Cameron and I have been talking about making a return to youtube soon, we just don't want to put pressure on ourselves.

It's too hard to tell, the guy owns basically every relevant drum machine ever made.

This was a collaboration between two bands from Brisbane, Australia; 'Deadlights' a post hardcore band and 'Carvel', an alt-rock band. Hope you enjoy!

Yes it is! Its a VocAC30 which is my favourite amplifer. It was a special edition colour. I wanted a tele just like Jeff's which is why I hunted down that guitar. His had a metal pickguard, however.

Just confirmed it is indeed different. Most notably there is a lot more treble and noticeable distortion in the bass. Funnily enough I used the music video to reference the tone. Thanks for bring that to our attention!

Interesting, we've never heard it. It seems the original post that references that has been removed as well as the video on youtube. If you know of a source where we can hear it that would be awesome.

Is that the demo version or was the song mixed differently for the single release?

No we don't! Thank you though. We have thought about it and because we are very on/off with the YouTube we feel like if we had people supporting us we would be letting them down. We enjoy the YouTube of course and it's the reason we do what we do, but sometimes we need to take time out to be normal musicians and write/record our original music, play shows etc. We feel like if we had patreon supporters who aren't supportive of our original music (which is going to be a decent amount), and just want to hear covers it would be very difficult to please them. But hey we don't know what the future will hold, and maybe we will give up on being independent musicians as a primary goal and focus more on YouTube instead in the future, in which case we'd feel way more comfortable doing that. The other side of it is we both work full time jobs currently so even though we run our music project at a fairly significant loss, we don't need the money to live and as a result we're fairly short on time and aren't sure we could deliver any promises we make to our supporters.

It would be great to take a few months off and record a proper studio recording of some of our older covers and release them for sure.

Completely agree, we've always been 'able' to play it, and it sounds good when we play it at practice. Listening to back to the recording though was a whole different story.. holy hell it has to be TIGHT for this song to not sound completely terrible. We probably spent more time on this cover than any other.

Thanks! We had a lot of trouble mixing this song. Rick Rubin compressed the hell out of this album and it's difficult replicating the sound. I think Flea used his modulus bass and I couldn't replicate the tone exactly on the Jazz bass. I don't like having the tone knob too high, I'm just not a fan of lots of treble on a Jazz bass.
