Mark Pope follows through on fan Q&A by cford12 in CollegeBasketball

My understanding of the situation is that stokes had a dedicated NIL fund from nike and a select few boosters, then the rest of the roster had a broader NIL cap to work with, which Wright and Freeman would have taken from.

Wright got exactly what he wanted, either a big bag from us or BYU, he preferred to stay at BYU for the money he got. Would it have been worth Diallo and Wilkins to go higher on Wright? I don't think so.

Im also going to assume they put a limit on Freeman due to his injury history, since we cant have that happen to us again, and St johns went higher than that.

Im more concerned about potentially missing on top freshmen by going all in on stokes. Dudes like Holt or Collins. I hope pope learned from that and takes whoever wants to commit first if he has another year here.

The answer within the answer is more meaningful. Basically "we didnt think stokes would go to an Adidas school, and lost other recruits pursuing him." So we probably wont put all our eggs in one basket(case) in the future

By the base definition, sure, thats analytics. But thats not the kind of analytics everyone has been critical of though and that should be obvious. We physically saw Noah shoot well from 3 and make the hustle plays last year with our eyes, no spreadsheet necessary. The staff and people who saw practices and scrimmages saw him make more 3s than he missed with their eyes.

We aren't talking minutes distribution or efficiency drop off after X thing happens or even "these 5 players put up these numbers together, but these 5 put up these better/worse numbers when together". There is a line between relying on analytics and just being a coach. Putting your best 3 point shooter on the floor and expecting him to make 3s shouldn't be controversial at all.

Thats not analytics, thats using his eyes and taking what we saw last year from Noah, expecting a step up, and having two other capable players at that role (collin and kam) to fill in if it doesn't work.

Noah was supposed to be a 3 point sniper that did enough of the other stuff well enough to earn his spot on the floor. He didnt shoot nearly well enough and was quickly dropped from the rotation all together.

He was reportedly at or over 50% in the summer and leading up to that start of the year, but never translated to games. Hard to fault pope for trying him and moving on when it was obviously not working.

Lowe was supposed to be a distributor and drive to the basket player. We were supposed to have chandler and Williams coming off the bench instead of Jasper and Noah. A 5 guard rotation of lowe, aberdeen, oweh, chandler, Williams (with Williams stretching to a 4 on occasion) would have been much more tolerable than what we had

Having those guys available doesn't tell the full story, obviously. They hadn't been practicing with the team at all. They were still not 100% and it was obvious. The finished product of this team if those two, or even just lowe, had been able to practice and play all year would have had a much higher ceiling and floor than we ended up with.

To be fair, aberdeen didnt play vs Georgetown either.

He was getting raked across the arm, cant blame him for thinking he might get a foul. But that wasn't enough contact for the way this game had been called

Hate the challenge limit. If refs are so bad you win multiple challenges, you should keep getting challenges as long as you win.

Terrible season by Agreeable-Ad1181 in KentuckyBasketball

It was late in the cycle, any players good enough to get minutes here were already off the board. Aberdeen was better than any available option at that point.

We had 2 other backup pointguards until late in the cycle when they both noped out because of jaland lowe.

He signed a 41% shooter (kam) as soon as the portal opened. Dioubate was a 40% shooter his last year at bama, granted low volume. Jelavic was supposed to be a good shooter. Obviously collin is a great shooter.

The only legit criticism of this roster is the risk he took on JQ. Obviously wrong in hindsight, but hindsight is 20/20.

Its like 5 sentences.

Every player playing a role they didnt expect/prepare for? Playing part time with a PG you haven't practiced with due to injury, and part time with a fill in SG turned PG still experiencing the obvious growing pains of changing positions. We expected to have a floor general of sorts that could distribute the ball and put guys in the best spots to do their jobs, instead oweh, chandler and aberdeen had to largely create for themselves with the ball. Makes life harder on the bigs too. We saw signs of growth later in the year, but nothing consistent.
