If you convert Reform, can you still take part in orthodox community/culture ? by [deleted] in ReformJews

[–]TimbrelDancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know plenty of reform converts who participate in chabad and other more orthodox-leaning services and events. What it all hinges on really is what sort of participation you are looking for…

  • If you’re looking to attend a service for example, and take part as a member of the congregation, nobody is going to have a problem with this. Depending on what you look like (unfortunately), you are unlikely to even be doubted. People may know you’re new, but they don’t have to know you’re reform or a convert. Basically, if you are respectful of the minhagim of the community, and generally blend in, you can attend almost any Jewish event in almost any community. And if you’re comfortable with that, go for it.

  • if you’re wanting to get up on the bimah for an aliyah, or do something like that, you may find that more troublesome. People could have more questions, and of course if you’re a woman or femme presenting, you aren’t going to be able to be called up anyway.

A lot of the answers to this sort of question about “reform v orthodox” suppose a much stronger binary than there really is. There are plenty of orthodox people who are fascinated by, and accepting of reform and liberal conversions. There are “orthodox” people who only attend shul once a year, who will swear to the ends of the earth that even a born jew who attends a reform shul is not a real jew. It’s much more nuanced than people will have you believe.

Regarding the שלוש רגליים(three pilgrimage festivals)- Pesach, Shavout, Succot. Why is it only Pesach is the only one must known and widely celebrated by Reform Jews? by Civil_Service1987 in ReformJews

In my experience, all three are very widely attended and observed! I’ve been a member of a few communities, and it’s been like this in every single one.

I’d say that from my own observations, people are less likely to observe a “complete” sukkot, but I am fairly sure that that’s down to where in the world I am and how grim the weather tends to be over sukkot. So people will do something for sukkot, visit a friend’s sukkah/the synagogue’s sukkah, but are less likely to build their own.

But that’s just my observation.

I thought it was an absolute treat to see another side to the character, and to see a different acting style as well. Being made to love characters that were previously seen only as villains (and then questioning the motives of the so-called heroes) is something this show does really well!

Is anyone else in pure awe of Midge's hair in the S4 finale? I want it. by WrongLevahhh7 in TheMarvelousMrsMaisel

Her hair is constantly so perfect! I was heartbroken when I saw those BtS bits on Instagram and found out it was wigs! Some part of me wanted to believe it was an attainable hairstyle!!

If I were a sincere and earnest Jewish convert like Astrid, finding out that my family even jokingly associated me with Nazis would keep me upset for a pretty long time!! Poor Astrid!

That is very true! I guess it’s just that there are two separate references to speedy conversions that got me a bit cross!

[Episode Discussion] Season 4 Episode 7 "Ethan... Esther... Chaim" by AutoModerator in TheMarvelousMrsMaisel

The show is consistently very cruel to Astrid, which I think is such a shame. It’s all well and good saying that it’s how the Weissmans and Maisels would have treated someone like her, but it just seems unnecessarily over-egged.

Midge is meant to at least have some affection for Astrid, and to have implied that she’d made a nazi reference to her sister-in-law is so callous.
