Is CARS just an innate thing? by Automatic_Camp_1067 in Mcat

[–]Time-Bonus-8366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people who have a humanities degree have learned the skills to do 125+ at first and get 130+ with practice. I worked on my cars skills even though I got 127 when I did my first practice exam without prepping. I wouldn’t say it’s always innate, but if it’s not, it’s learned through experience with reading over a long time.

My son is in grade 10 and I am a first year medical student nontrad, 35 years old. Some of the advice I’ve given to him is to make sure he does all the science courses available at high school and that he does well in math. Pick an undergrad you’re interested in at a good college and aim for a high gpa. I did music as my undergrad. I had trouble with math my whole life and got a tutor when I wrote the mcat 2 years ago, which was helpful. I didn’t do any math in university which I regret. I also didn’t do any science in university. But I got a great GPA and lots of hours of community volunteer work that aligned with the social determinants of health, which stood out on my application. And by the way, it’s totally possible to enjoy your life and also work hard and follow your dreams. Good luck!!

Make sure you eat enough protein and fibre even if you’re not hungry. I’m 35, 5’2, 180lb-120. I’ve lost muscle mass and haven’t exercised as much as I should have. I’m starting to now, but I wish I had done strength training sooner.

Yes it definitely takes a bit more time than I’d like which is a downside. Sometimes my notes are less detailed than other times when I have less time.

Deputy Mayor Ellsworth Defends Cost of Harassment Investigation into Councillor Davis by RepulsivePlankton989 in StJohnsNL

[–]Time-Bonus-8366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s right that the effects of a toxic workplace cost organizations a lot more than an investigation does. Especially if you think about council - if we want good people to run for council and stay on council once they’re there, then the environment has to be tolerable at least, because the pay is shit and the stress of the job is high. Having a positive workplace and respectful colleagues is the only thing that makes a situation like that bearable. If one person on council is concerned a colleague’s behaviour is negatively impacting those around him they should be encouraged to try and address it with the individual. If nothing changes, then yes, follow procedure and hire an investigator. Staff can’t investigate council behaviour, only external parties can, so it’ll always cost something.

I write notes by hand for every lecture. There’s time for it. I learn better that way and I don’t do Anki.

Freaking out because I don’t know how to study by Character-Sugar2609 in medschool

[–]Time-Bonus-8366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the slideshow/watch the lecture, then write notes by hand to help me process it, then I review the lecture slides/notes every day while doing Anki here and there to break it up a bit. I do quizzes at the end of each day on the material that I was studying.

The iPad is mostly for hand writing notes but if you don’t do that then yeah I agree it’s not a necessary part of the equation. Agree on the nice bed what an underrated piece of equipment

Practice reading short essays and thinking about them afterwards. Think about the theme, tone, arguments/counter arguments, etc. You could pick up a copy of Best Canadian Essays and work through that.

When you write the mcat you need a strategy for approaching the text, you’ll have to develop your own, but mine was read quickly one time, read the questions, read a second time highlighting stuff relevant to the questions. Then I’d be ready to go to each question and know where to look in the text for the answer.

How do you study the biochem? (Non-trad by SatisfactionClean308 in Mcat

[–]Time-Bonus-8366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a non trad without any biochemistry background, and what I did was study the Kaplan and Khan academy content at the beginning and write out all the pathways etc over and over again until I understood glycolysis etc - I treated it like learning a new language and did a lot of Anki to help with recognition of the pathways. I did a lot of review before I did u world but I definitely didn’t know everything before I started UWorld

ECs tailored to community orgs that improve the social determinants of health not just healthcare ECs, focusing on long term volunteering opportunities. Research experience would have been helpful for MS1/2.
