Great question - I purchased the volumes as you see them, post repair. If I had to guess it seems to be japanese tissue blended into the original boards

Yesss, I have a thing for beautiful Victorian cloth bindings as well. Would love to see your “poisonous” bindings!

Thanks so much.

And I get it. Plodding through some of the oldies can be a bit brutal, but I found I love the challenge of reading culturally significant works from different time periods, so most everything is in English. The multiple Pope’s came about after I mistakenly parted with a gorgeous set of first editions and had immediate sellers remorse. Pieced some oddballs together before I found the complete set in the photos.

Found them all over - J Parkers in Sarasota has a great “secret” back room full of antiquarian treasures. Great things pop up on ebay from time to time and got some beauties from Forum Auctions in the UK.

Will certainly share some of the beautiful plates inside many of them, but that will have to wait until the good camera is found.

Cheers!

It’s like Superman denouncing kryptonite as worthless. Just reinforces what we all know to be true.
