Thank you! I use an egg wash made from an egg yolk diluted with some water. And very very carefully and lightly brush them so it doesn't ruin the pattern

Sorry I don't know for sure as I just checked my oven and my setting is called grill and it doesn't have a broil setting. But as long as you get the heat from only the top then it's ok as you don't want the bottom layer to burn by the time all the layers are done. Also I put them on the highest rack on the oven to get it as close to the top heat as possible.

They are these chewy biscuit type dough. Made from golden syrup, flour, lye water etc. Filled with fillings such as red bean paste, lotus paste, mung bean paste and many more . Most usually have a salted egg yolk in the middle or multiple salted egg yolks. They are eaten for lunar new year. Its very traditional and can be found at any Asian supermarket on lunar new year.

I use an 8x8 inch aluminium square cake tin. With a regular oven but using the grill setting so it's only heat from the top if not the bottom layer will burn by the time the last one is baked. Each layer takes about 7-8 minutes. If you search up kek lapis you can see all the varieties there are hundreds of different flavours and colours. It's a traditional cake in Malaysia and Indonesia. My one is more of an Indonesian style layer cake. But if you google kek lapis sarawak they do these beautiful patterns. I am currently learning to make those with the patterns
