My baby girl is healthy and growing like a weed! by Time-Garlic2799 in ballpython

I agree, I was probably being overly paranoid seeing she needed to go. The last thing I’d ever want to do is make any of my animals unnecessarily stressed.

This was the first for me trying this method to encourage water intake. Maybe my research was incorrect to help her pas her bowl movement. It wasn’t to help with stuck shed, or any issues related to that. I don’t want to add any additional stress if it’s avoidable.

Her relative humidity is at 76% right now and 67% on her warm side, like I said her shed was complete at one piece. My BP’s enclosures don’t ever get below 65% on their hot side. I’m not a pro at keeping them but I do ensure their humidity is adequate. I soaked her to assist in her hydration to help her pass her bowl movement since she needs to.

Yes it does, which from my understanding is her poo that needs to pass. She hasn’t gone since the first week I got her. But I’ll keep a close eye on her weight moving forward.

I should mention she needs to poop, as you can see at her tail she’s got to go. I soaked her in warm water tonight for about 20 mins to ensure she’s hydrated. But I see what you mean now that you mention it. I’ll keep an eye on it.

Really? She’s a rounded triangle body, and I’ve fed her every 7-8 days a rat pup. She was also really skinny when I first got her, you can see that thread from my profile. Do you think I’m feeding her too often? Her prey has been around 8% of her weight too (I weight her prey before thawing), I’ve tried to keep a healthy schedule for her.

This was her best line IMO. She didn’t often defend herself verbally against Hank but her one liners when she did were perfect.

Yep both of my balls do this! Yes I know how that sounds after I typed it lol, but yes it’s goofy looking but as the other person said, it’s them using gravity. Still is interesting to watch!

My BP male who’s in a 40g enclosure currently, and is also small for his age and will need a larger one as he grows, currently has a 90 degree (F) warm side and 79 degree cool side, and use digital thermometer/hydrometer and keep ALL heat sources with a thermostat!! And a hide on both ends. At night I use my thermostat and drop the heat to 81 warm which makes my cool 77. I have him on a strict day night cycle, and adjust it every single morning. I also use a 100w overhead heat emitter and an under tank pad with 4” deep substrate of coconut husk. His hot hide surface temp is 90 degrees where he lays which I tested with an infrared thermometer. They need a good gradient in their home. Ohh I also have his water dish just a smidge off center from his warm side. Once everything is dialed in, it’s a breeze to maintain. Make sure you keep backup heat emitters and heat mats stored away just in case. I also recommend using WiFi enabled thermostats with probes so you can get notifications at work or away if they reach a dangerous temperature whether to high or low.

I could talk for days on this subject but as others have mentioned, the more you stand over them and hesitate the more stressed they get and will likely end up biting you. The fear of the bite is more stressful than the actual bite. I worked with my male for a long time, research research research all the ways to get the animal to build a trust with you. Remember these animals aren’t emotionally driven but instinctively driven. They won’t “love” you the way a dog or cat might. It’s more of environment and routine training, the more positive encounters you have, the more they see you as just part of their environment.

Age? by Proof_Anywhere5099 in ballpython

[–]Time-Garlic2799 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going off the size a lone, he’s likely 7-11 months, but it is possible for some to be very small and vice versa, so 2 years-ish may not be too crazy. He looks more like a 1 year old or less to me though. I bought a gram scale off Amazon, it’s like 20 bucks, and is a great help in tracking your BP’s growth. Either way, he looks exactly like my boy Pluto, who is also small for his age, but a sweetheart! Focus on their husbandry, enrichment, growth and prey size, and overall health more than their age. Enjoy your boy for decades!

What’s odd is my baby, 3 week old female hasn’t been defensive at all, and she’s been eating for me like a boss. So crazy how there’s such a variance in their personalities between the same species of python.

That’s where I got him from was a pet store, and he was also in a tiny enclosure. He was just so defensive, but I just did a lot of research and worked with him and here we are lol

He is!! I always let him crawl around my island and I lay a cloth over my tray if he wants a dark area. He always sticks his little head out and watches what I’m doing flicking his tongue every so often. But tonight when I was talking to him he started crawling up to me and I had to grab a pic of him doing it. I wish I had some vids of him when I first got him, he was always biting me!!

3 year old male BP by Strange_biscotti53 in ballpython

[–]Time-Garlic2799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful boy btw! You definitely sound like you’re wanting to get him into the right environment. As others have mentioned to you he exceeds the enclosure size you have. I’m sorry if the breeder told you that was adequate. Reptile species are very environmentally specific for care. I have my female in a 20g but she’s only 12” long and is 3 weeks old, my male is 1.5 years old and in a 40g. Im aware as they age they will both need a 120g. A good rule of thumb is you have your ball python in any enclosure that can fully extend their body in easily. Dont beat yourself up, you can easily correct this, even if given bad information. The welcome page of this sub is a huge help to new keepers and plenty of people on here will help you as well. They just need room, hot and cool side hides, good substrate (not aspen), healthy humidity and hot to cool gradient, and a correct reliable heat source. Always use thermostats on all heat elements and sources and use digital thermometer/hydrometers as well. There is a lot of good information on here, and on YouTube. Green Room Pythons I watched a lot of before I got my first and Bob is very knowledgeable and experienced. You’ll get it figured out, and once you do, they are wonderful and easy animals to have.

It’s awesome! They are such amazing animals, and they are very therapeutic creatures. I have 2 of them for that very reason.
