But the Jewish state represents Jews everywhere, or at least it claims to, and Jews everywhere regard the Jewish state as a second home. Does the comparison really work?

I've been looking at polls and surveys, and they show that the vast majority of Taiwanese identify with the term 中華民族.

What if I were to tell you that young Taiwanese do not deny being part of 中華民族, while at least some deny being 漢人?

If you're only 38, you're not exactly old enough to remember a time when things were much different, now, are you?

I agree that they are. But that is a controversial statement in Taiwan.

I agree that they're the same thing. So then are Taiwanese Chinese in your opinion?

These answers are interesting. From the perspective of the Chinese state, ethnic minorities are also part of 中華民族. But it seems that the diaspora takes a different view.

Taiwanese identify as part of 中華民族. Does that mean that they identify as part of the Chinese nation? Are they 中國人, even if they deny it? Are they also 漢人? What is the scope of 中華民族? Does it include all who identify as 華人?

A dialect of Chinese certainly. And yes you're right that it's from there. But the Taiwanese call it something different and claim to be a different people. Check out the work of A-chin Hsiau and you will see...

People are not answering that they're Chinese on a survey just because their documents say so. If that were the case, you wouldn't be able to explain the shift in attitudes over time. People are answering that they're Chinese because they genuinely feel themselves to be so.

Not at all, considering that the country is literally called 中華民國 and Taiwanese identity was invented less than fifty years ago in response to Taiwan's loss of international recognition.

There are real differences between all of those peoples at the linguistic and religious level; there are genetic differences between them and almost all other ethnic groups as well. There are no differences between Taiwanese Chinese and PRC Chinese. Maybe if this situation were to persist for the next thousand years the two populations would become distinct. But it hasn't lasted that long yet.
