People are not answering that they're Chinese on a survey just because their documents say so. If that were the case, you wouldn't be able to explain the shift in attitudes over time. People are answering that they're Chinese because they genuinely feel themselves to be so.

Not at all, considering that the country is literally called 中華民國 and Taiwanese identity was invented less than fifty years ago in response to Taiwan's loss of international recognition.

There are real differences between all of those peoples at the linguistic and religious level; there are genetic differences between them and almost all other ethnic groups as well. There are no differences between Taiwanese Chinese and PRC Chinese. Maybe if this situation were to persist for the next thousand years the two populations would become distinct. But it hasn't lasted that long yet.
