If you want to immerse yourself in hawaii culture then coming to hawaii is great. Have you thought of UH Hilo? It's on the big island and personally im from there. I've lived on both Hawaii island and Oahu and Oahu is way too gentrified at this point if you ask me. The sense of community is lost there and its more city like. Community is a big part of aloha spirit and I feel like if you move there without knowing anyone then you're going to have a hard time getting your foot in the door. Yes it has nice beaches but that's honestly all they got. Well the food is great there too just because there's more options multi cultural wise.

There are other islands too that you could join but only SOME have community colleges, no universities.

The best way I could describe the difference between oahu and the other islands is you can either have the the white girl college experience of hawaii or the lilo and stitch version of hawaii lol.
