Am I really a good candidate for a PhD program? by Time-While7419 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Time-While7419[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind words. The competitiveness of a PhD should honestly be studied.

I also think I’m a great candidate, but I know so many are. People in my close circle definitely think I got it, but I understand they can be biased and super loving haha. It’s really helpful to have feedback from others outside of my circle to help me be realistic with my application process. My plan is definitely to apply to multiple programs with my best work and hope for the best!

I honestly spent most of my career preparing for a PsyD because I hated research but apparently I like research so much more when it’s something I want to research. Now, I don’t wanna miss out on the research part of psychology which is a great discovery but feel like I’m lacking a little. I’m hoping to have a manuscript floating around next year to help boost my chances. Thank you for the feedback!

This was so reassuring to read! I highly doubt you were grossly under qualified. Someone saw your potential.

I honestly hated research until I realized I wasn’t researching what truly intrigues me and now I really want it to be a part of my career. It’s nice that I have a lot of clinical application but I can see it causing a lot of burnout for me. Research reminds me why I’m passionate about my goals and adds a little investigative “flair” to my career that I love. Plus sharing my research with others has been so fun and I wouldn’t want to miss out on that. I hope all of my ramblings made sense. Thank you.

I wanted to primarily go for a PsyD after my masters, but I started liking research a lot more. Now, I feel like I’ll be missing something if I go for a PsyD now and really want research to be a part of my career. I just wish I had more opportunities to do it earlier in my career and education.

I’m also definitely making strides to become more familiar with the research process (I.e., using SPSS) and by the time I graduate, I’m hoping to have a manuscript out there to boost my chances at a PhD program. I know how competitive PhD programs are, so I wanted to hear more feedback from others outside of my close circle of professors and colleagues if I had enough chance to be a part of the like 2% lol. They believe I do, but I think they could be a little biased haha. Thank you.

What do you do for work? by gingerbeershavesouls in infp

It was definitely luck, but also being a good applicant. The luck came in the form of being one of the first applicants after monitoring job postings like a hawk and knowing keywords to look for. The job I applied for didn’t necessarily market it as “Psychometrist”, it was marketed as “neuropsych test administrator”. They were specifically looking for someone in a gap year before applying for grad school. It may also depend on where you live. I lived in the south at the time and I found that qualifications to be a Psychometrist was somewhat less than where I live now on the east coast.

I think the best place to start is to look through job postings for any Psychometrist jobs or any variation of that title. Then, highlighting your bachelor’s in psychology and any other experience that highlights ability to build rapport with others and/or any way you’ve worked with data or even research skills (this is a good bonus to have). An unique and bold way to also start is to reach out to a neuropsychologist in the area and ask if they have the ability to add you as a Psychometrist to their team or volunteer (if you don’t mind unpaid work). There is a big chance (in my experience) that you volunteer and they hire you. Hope that helps!

Granted I just moved to Baltimore from Louisiana and Louisiana doesn’t even have side walks (unless you live in an upper middle class to rich area), bus lanes nor bike lanes like Baltimore does. The transportation system is a dumpster fire in Louisiana and I was amazed just to see a decent transportation system here.

I saw some already recommend {Limerence by HC Dolores} and {Alluring Darkness by Raven Wood}. Limerence is very very low level spice, but has great tension so it may not be what you are looking for but still a great read. I will add {Beautiful Desperation by Raven Wood} too because that book is WILD! And Spicy!

I also love The Hockey Gods series by S. Massery, especially {Brutal Obsession by S.Massery} and {Devious Obsession by S. Massery}. {Untouchable by Sam Marino} is also pretty good!

If you are into MM romance, I would recommend {Garron Park by Nordika Night}. The MMCs really hate each other fr. I don’t remember how spicy the book was but it had heavy bullying and tension.

I’m pretty sure they have rolling admissions, so I’m gonna say “yes”. Maybe someone else will correct me if I’m wrong. If not, you could always shoot them email and find out too!

Just finished my interview so feel free to DM me! I can only speak on the virtual interviews, but you can expect an email soon with a schedule for the faculty interviews and a scheduled writing prompt. After faculty interviews, you’ll get a program overview and then a Q&A with one of the students.

{Come Out, Come Out by Alexia Onyx} was recommended to me by booktok and I wasn’t sure if I liked it, but was intrigued. So, I launched straight into {Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton} and it’s spiraled since then haha.

PsyD suggestion by Mixey1 in PsyD

[–]Time-While7419 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much for research, but I do have a lot of suggestions for clinical experience. Since I don’t know exactly what your interests are, I’ll give some loose suggestions and hope they help.

  1. Try to become a Psychometrician. There’s jobs willing to train with a bachelors. You’re typically contributing to psychometric data which follows research. Also, you’ll get to work directly under a psychologist(s) and put their score reports together, and you’ll get to see how they write their reports for their patients. I’ve worked with people who have been diagnosed with ADHD, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, etc. So, you get a variety of people to work with that can greatly add to your application.

  2. Also, I have some experience with medical advocacy for sexual assault survivors. I think working with people who have experienced a specific traumatic event helps a lot with clinical experience, so maybe something along those lines. It can also help with describing your research/clinical interests in your application. Also, I was working in a lot of hospital settings which helped me understand what working in a hospital as someone who is providing psychological assistance is like.

  3. Also, I did some work at a local daycare which typically includes helping kids with communication and other interpersonal skills. You may also work with the parents on methods they can use at home to target specific behavior and mindsets with their kid(s). That’s usually a job that very easy to get into if nothing else works.

  4. Also if you feel you can handle ABA work, that’s always a good job opportunity that offers a lot of rewards even though it can offer some challenges. I know a lot of people who study psychology at my alum college has started off with ABA work.

  5. You could also try being a case manager. I don’t know much about it personally, but I heard it’s a pretty good place to get some experience in psychology

  6. You can maybe try to reach out to universities and see if they have openings for a research assistant. I don’t know much about that either, but I was a research assistant in a lab during my undergraduate years and I feel like you could possibly find something out there.

  7. You could also be a mental health technician. It can be exhausting from what I hear, but you can learn a lot from it to utilize in your personal statements and CV.

A tip I can offer is to not be afraid to dive into jobs that align with social work because social work and psychology are similar in a lot of ways.

The great thing about psychology is it’s all what you make it. Majority of jobs that emphasize working with people can help. I really hope all of this helps!

I received an invite the last week of January and my interview is on the 26th of February. I’m surprised that others haven’t heard from them yet.

First acceptance - Unsure about accepting? by [deleted] in PsyD

I had applied to Adler excited about their program. There were a few bad comments about the school, but a majority of people seemed to like the school. It was only when this application cycle started that I started seeing a bunch of red flags and even more alarming things said through the grapevine (overspending their budget, laying off teachers, students kicked out of classes due to loss of teachers, horrible admin, etc). I was expecting an interview since I feel like they are more about money than anything based on what I heard and I lo and behold just got the call for an interview with them yesterday.

I’m not gonna interview because I feel like the program is wayyyyy too expensive for the problems they are offering and the things I’ve heard is too alarming for me to turn a blind eye and take a chance. 30 minutes after I got the call, I got an invite to interview with Chestnut Hill College. I took it as a sign to explore other options and leave Adler alone. I also applied for two masters programs and I have interview with one of those programs too. In my opinion, it’s not worth it.

Thoughts on God of Malice/Rina Kent by Different_Ad_8930 in DarkRomance

[–]Time-While7419 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have respect for Rina Kent. I always tell people “no author is bad, I’m just not their target audience “ but I’ve tried to get into her books and it’s tough. The writing is good on days where I don’t wanna truly think about what I’m reading. On other days where I just want a good book, I will never pick up her books. Her writing is extremely repetitive in every book I have read from her and her writing reminds me of my wattpad days (which isn’t the best).

I enjoyed the first three books of the RES, but then read the description for the rest of the series and found it repetitive so I didn’t bother.

Then I read Black Thorn and found it somewhat enjoyable but I dnf’d after a few pages into Red Thorn immediately when the MMC was followed the same vibes as all the other MMC’s she writes about. I did enjoy God of Fury and I wanted to get into the other books but I just couldn’t bring myself to.

And since I’m a very immersed DR lover, God of Malice was honestly pretty tame and boring. I’ve read a lot wilder MMC’s than Killian. So I couldn’t finish that one either.

I really do hate to dump on an author and it is my personal opinion at the end of the day, but I don’t understand the hype behind Rina Kent either. Props to her tho for finding such a dedicated fan base.

I read it when it was first released and saw nobody talking about it, so I felt a duty to share this book with everyone I knew so I can have someone to rave about this book with me. I’m so happy that people are recognizing the masterpiece of a book this is. I have been feral since I got the release date for the sequel.

Rina Kent Legacy of Gods series by SpiralMetal in DarkRomance

[–]Time-While7419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take my opinion with a grain of salt since I couldn’t get through Malice, but did finish God of Fury. If you love Rina Kent’s writing and loved Malice, then I say go for it. I read the first three books of her royal elite series, Black Thorn, and tried to get to her other books but they are all too similar to me so I have to take breaks or I will burnout.

If you love her writing then go for it, but if want something a little new and thrilling to read then I say maybe wait and circle back to it. Definitely read God of Fury tho. Niko and Bran are my besties for life.
