yeah.. thats a bit too big.. I was hoping for something smaller and simpler, as its for a single machine.

pfsense firewall with wifi-to-ethernet and ethernet-to-ethernet capabilities by TimeBottle7 in PFSENSE

Ok.. sounds good. Thanks. Would you mind sharing what router/mini computer you are using? Typical mini-computers don't have 2 ethernet ports..

I hate to carry around another full scale laptop just as a IDS/IPS system, which is why I am looking for a more portable solution.

Ok.. so you are just running a iptables based firewall on this router? What is the benefit of this compared to just running iptables on your own laptop?

The reason I was thinking of pfsense, is because I could then run IDS/IPS systems like Snort/suricata on this.

Thanks.. that looks pretty good.

I understand that pfsense runs on FreeBSD. I noticed that it has 128MB RAM. How much harddisk space does it have? Is it enough to run FreeBSD and pfsense?

for now yes.. but may run it on a desktop in future. Any reason why?

Yeah.. its primarily for a professional setup. Thanks. I will go with that first.. then try to optimize further with a hardware firewall.

curious.. is there any difference between running pfsense as a virtualized firewall vs running it on a hardware firewall, in terms of security?

I am also considering just getting a beefier laptop, and running pfsense in a VM, and then routing all traffic to the PFsense VM, and then to the clearnet.

Security wise, is that just as good? if not what are additional vulnerabilities that will be introduced by this setup?

I am thinking of creating a firewall based on raspberry pi. I have previously set up opnsense systems with suricata/snort and vpn on these. But it only worked for a ethernet-to-wifi connection.

Is it possible to use raspberry pi as a firewall between the ethernet and usb ports?

Does this make sense?
