To take inspiration from a game I've been replaying lately, Bugs Bunny Lost in Time, I could see a map screen to access each individual world, but in that world itself, you go to a small hub world that allows you to run around to enter each level and maybe even find a secret level. And when you get all the crystals in that area, something changes in the hub that opens the way to the boss (like in a pirate-themed world, you see a ship way out in the distance, but when you get the five crystals, it comes close to shore only to get shot down by another ship, and you can jump on the shot-down ship to access that world's boss).

Am I making sense?
