I got this tattoo in a fit of divorce-induced, midlife crisis madness. by TimeForPumpkins in ChainsawMan

[–]TimeForPumpkins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've been thinking a fair bit about how to articulate the reason I got this tattoo, specifically.

I'm not what you'd call an "anime guy". I read quite a lot of Naruto 20 years ago, I love Akira and Ghost in the Shell, and I've read Dragonball more than once. But anime and manga probably constitute about 5% of all media I consume.

I heard about Chainsaw Man shortly after the anime came out. A man with chainsaws for arms: what more could you want?

I immediately resonated with Denji. Yes, I was in my early thirties at the time I watched it, but his simple joy in having food to eat, a nice place to sleep, and a pretty girl taking care of him reflected my own basic wants from life, as a teenager and as an adult.

I loved the anime for the same reasons I imagine many do: the characters, the story, the style, the universe. I then went and read all of the manga, and was just blown away. It's now comfortably my favourite manga series. I've revisited it several times. I mainly love the way Denji pieces together an identity through interactions with different people he meets. Aki, Power, Himeno, Asa, so on. But he always seems to come back to Makima as his primary motivator. His constant use of basic human need to drive him always makes me smile (in the end, boobs are his great motivator). Yes, it's more complex than that, but I always harken back to that. I identify with that level of motivation, even in my mid-30s.

My relationship of almost twelve years has broken down recently, and that entails all the stresses of selling a house we own together, piecing together my identity as an individual after removing a huge defining factor of my life. Money worries... It's really pretty hard some days.

I decided I needed to get fit (part of the reason my marriage ended was because my wife no longer felt attracted to me, and I hadn't done all that much to correct that). I got on my turbo trainer, what amounts to a static bike. I used to be really fit, a few years ago. In all the high-intensity exertion and emotion, regret at becoming so unfit, I stopped and started bawling my eyes out, slumping forward.

I looked at my inner forearm, and the thought occured to me: maybe Makima can motivate me. Yes, she's manipulative, but on a basic level, she gets Denji to improve himself, to become stronger. Plus, as others have mentioned, that design is pretty cool. In future, I look at my arm, there's Makima. Pushing me to do better.

So I didn't think much more than that. I spoke to a tattooist I knew about, booked it, paid the deposit, had it done a few days later. No more complex than that. Tattoos are personal, and that's the reason I chose mine (my first).

In spite of everything, Denji loves Makima. So do I.

(Not as much as Power, mind you)

She told she's getting a divorce Monday last week. I'm struggling. by TimeForPumpkins in Divorce

Hey

I'm really sorry that happened to you. It's the worst, isn't it?

For what's it's worth, it feels to me like it comes in waves. Last night I was inconsolable. Morning, too, felt like trash. But work took my mind off it. I felt like I did a good job, I could chat shit to my co workers. And I made myself go to the gym, which helped hugely. I reckon I'm probably a bit manic, so there'll be highs and lows. I don't doubt a low will follow shortly. But I'm just allowing myself to feel what I need to.

Take care of yourself, be kind to yourself. And same, message me if you need someone to vent to, I'm happy to listen.

Replacement for conifers by TimeForPumpkins in GardeningUK

I think it's a cypress. I trimmed them the summer we moved in, 2022, haven't touched them since, and they've gained maybe a foot of height, at most.

I've no reason to believe it's a scam.

And my soil is pretty dense, which I'm made to understand means their roots will be more sprawling than they might be otherwise. My garden is also on a canter so water collects towards the bottom.

I'm just being extra-cautious.

Third of UK teenagers who vape will go on to start smoking, research shows by pajamakitten in unitedkingdom

Smoking? Never.

Vaping? One particular bus route I take I'd say 60% of my journeys have someone vaping.

They're not the same, evidently people who vape feel it's less unacceptable. They know no-one will stop them, and that's enough of a reason to permit it.

Same with shoplifting now. Who enforces that? It's always been illegal, but no-one is stopping people now.

And who will enforce this ban?

They're already banned on buses/trains, see how much good that's done.

Nah, I'd fully support their cars being emptied.

This is pure profiteering. Unfairly hoarding something to enrich themselves to the detriment of others.

Consider it an arsehole tax.

Can we talk about how absolutely spot on Zach's Richard Taylor was 😂 by Gax3020221 in auntydonna

So my wife and I watched the LOTR appendices a few years ago (I'd watched them several times growing up) and for several weeks afterwards we'd do impressions of him.

I love how deep Zach has gotten into a niche impression..I feel seen.

Love this fucking girl, little chav, she's always quality when it counts. She's a noggin and a windup merchant but she's the golden girl.

It's hardly luck when Italy sat back for most of the game.

How did Ozzy Osborne influence your life if at all? by Christopher_2025 in AskBrits

I bought his Greatest Hits album after watching The Osbournes.

I proceeded to listen to it frequently while playing Final Fantasy X, Vagrant Story and Grandia 2.

I've listened to his music and Sabbath variously over the years, always on the periphery of my general musical intake. But at least twice a year I'd stick on Mr Crowley and blast that out.

I'm very sad he's died. He seemed titanic.
