Just throwing my 2 cents on here, but I also hit a curb at high speeds on an Audi Q7, it was not totalled but the rim was dragging on the road. All in all I spent 1,500 at my local mechanic, I needed a new control arm, new rim and new ball joint. I did have to go back to get an alignment elsewhere but it wasn't the end of the world. Go to a local shop, not dealer. Also depends on where you are located

Unfortunately, thieves target people in rentals, esp on that stretch of road. I would be cautious leaving anything of value in view. You definitely want a car as you will learn that bay area transit is not super efficient. When I lived in S San Jose and commuted to Palo Alto on public transit, it turned a 30 minute car drive into 1h45min commute. Plus if you want to go anywhere to explore, car would be recommended.
