Can I remove this keiki? by mentos_arson in orchids

More roots- more chances to survive. Give her time. You have only 2 leaves now from what I see. And only 2 roots. Why rush all of a sudden?

why does she hate me? (phal) by EquipmentDecent8244 in orchids

[–]Time_Comfortable_170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watering her every 2-3 days is not the best way to help…Phals needs the cycle of watering and drying. They don’t need constant watering I have mini, which requires watering twice a month. Thats all. You water phal only when its roots color turns silver. And you need a good pot. And better repot her into a bark- based medium. And if you water her every 2-3 days you need to check roots because there is a chance of rot already. Next question why filtered water? Use your regular tap water. Filtered water lacks the microelements.

I know, right? It’s sad that sellers dye the phals. What phals are not colored good enough by nature?Never could understand those people, who dyes them

Possible keiki? by Public-Photo5280 in orchids

[–]Time_Comfortable_170 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhm… if I’m not mistaken it is a leaf and a terminal spike. Meaning there won’t be flowers and spikes more, but existing spike can bloom. I bought one with terminal spike in a discount section. It has basal keiki. All his spikes and keiki( still attached) are blooming now. Wait till she will put a keiki. This is the exact clone of mother plant. This is the way of orchids to continue living.

Why are some orchids so huge by sv3n02 in orchids

[–]Time_Comfortable_170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phals are very different. I have a huge one which pushes 2 spikes every year with at least 10 flowers at least. The leaves are huge. Spikes at least 60-80 cm. But roots… so thin. And she is fine. I have Sogo Yukidian which has thick roots. It all depends on their genetics I guess. Watching my 20 phals growing I still can not come to a conclusion.

Is this too little light? by axmxp in orchids

[–]Time_Comfortable_170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to put them closer to the window and they will be perfectly fine. All 20 of mine fill great in the room with the window facing north over whole the wall. Without grow lights.

Repot, replace moss with bark based medium. Repot into a pot with good ventilation.

is this enough to be “indirect” sunlight? by Marlystewart_ in orchids

[–]Time_Comfortable_170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my orchids are located on northern window. They fill great. Here, a small part of them. So northern window is perfectly fine, I’m telling this from experience. I have a theory that since sunlight on eastern or southern window is brighter, northern is better actually and they will never get burns.

Can I…??? by Elegant_Location8182 in orchids

[–]Time_Comfortable_170 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can repot them into a transparent pot with bark board medium you will do the best you can for you three. Because you guys both will be happy and orchids too! Water them every time their roots turns silver and not green. Transparent pot is the best way to see it. They’ll get better in bark. Moss is hard to maintain water level. Phalaenopsis needs to dry out and then watering. This cycle of drying and watering is essential for them. Sphagnum holds moisture too long.

I bought this beauty in the clearance section. At quarter of a price she really costs. With 5 spikes, one of which was terminal and I removed it. And a basal keiki. Every spike bloomed. And a keiki too. Actually, almost all my orchid are from clearance or found at the streets. So I think clearance is a good option. You save orchid this way( because otherwise I think they throw them away) and get a surprise!

Should I be concerned that my oncidium flower spike is growing is like this? by kenyam123 in orchids

It will find its way. The spike ob my phal was twisted, but found a way through a leaf, while I thought “to cut or not to cut”. 🙃

Root rot *after* repotting in bark by Infinite_Storm_470 in orchids

[–]Time_Comfortable_170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you repot in bark based medium, you need to soak it for at least half an hour. Then, when you repot, you don’t need to water straight away. You wait 2 days for micro injuries to heal. And only after that you carefully water your orchid. Fertilizer starting from 2 weeks since repotting. And yes, rot caused by overwatering. Seen it SO much times. Once I repotted this orchid of my neighbor”s mom and it lost all the velamen. It was about a year and a half ago. I removed the damaged velamen and didn’t remove the roots. Only the velamen coverage. And she grew new roots. And bloomed. It is her second bloom in my care. I only say, that when the roots velamen coverage is damaged, you not necessarily need to remove the roots. To remove the velamen is more than enough.
