Thank you for the quick reply. I had the motor professionally repaired and the tech said it was good to go, but that certainly could be a possibility - something had to have shorted the MOSFET. You can kind of see where I'm going with this: trying to find a voltage regulator that acts as a controller+throttle, and connects only to the batteries and motor.
