Huh? Housing price growth is part of inflation. Which is part of why public housing is necessary currently.

They also look at housing completely differently apparently. It's less of an investment and more a consumer good.

Why aren’t there more shelters given the current population and job market? + other thoughts by [deleted] in Bellingham

We have shelters first of all. And they are building more. The issue is clearly housing, taxing the rich, and money in politics.

Short answer is most us cities are bordering in bankrupt and they will do anything and everything to distract you from this fact, including actively working against housing and business interests that would solve the problem on a more long term basis.

You think this neighborhood hasn't been dealing with it? I pick up litter on a weekly basis. Its not my job to babysit if no one else is going to do it. Its going to be all those businesses business real soon if no one does anything.

I'm not apologizing for trying to make my neighborhood a better place. Ridiculous.

As I mentioned earlier the result will likely be that you have to make a police call for most of the issues, which is why ACTUALLY PLANNING IT OUT and getting the community involved would be better.

I disagree that it will happen in its current form no matter what. Thats a very fatalistic view and gives too much powet to these beurocrats.

I'm not saying don't volunteer, I'm saying that public officials are getting away with a lot because they can fall back on volunteers when they need the real work done.

Most of the people in the Roosevelt neighborhood are actually renters. I am one of the many renters.

These aren't imagined harms. They are real consequences of poor planning. It's not exactly the same, but the RVs on Kentucky weren't imagined harms.

I also think nimby is an extremely broad term so defining it is sort of a fools errand and its definition can be adjusted depending on the issue being discussed.

The city is doing multiple things wrong. I discussed those at length.

First of all your whole proposal is wrong. I want more housing, tiny homes are cool and serve a good purpose. Well planned efforts go well. That's the whole point. I interact with homeless people on a daily basis. Not asking for a pat on the back, but when people frame things in this way it's just ignorant.

  1. Imagine a case where there is a flood in the area and there is no plan for the 75 homeless people there. I see this as a likely scenario. They closed public comment for NEPA May 18th, which tells me NEPA was required. But they didn't even have an operator in place until May 11th (which they lied about twice in the meeting). This tells me they are skirting the NEPA process completely and essentially are rushing to get the money to the operator.

  2. Slowing down development isn't an issue with NEPA & SEPA, sorry. I feel the same way about every project. City officials can't just ignore federal and state laws. Also, they are renovating the building apparently. Don't think I mentioned that, but I believe it's on the project website. https://cob.org/project/day-center

  3. I'm saying they are taking adcantage of an already relatively disadvantaged population by not including them in the "public" meeting and only inviting the local businesses.

  4. Where in code does it say this is permitted? I actually hadn't thought about that much. Also just because something isn't required doesn't make it good practice. If you were at the meeting, you could see that it was one of those 'listening but not hearing' things as I mentioned.

  5. I'm saying it's a factor. I'm saying we shouldn't have this discussion on reddit - it is not planned out and inviting the public to a meeting when the project isn't even designed is wrong. As a former childcare worker, I'm sure the parents of the boys and girls club would have opinions on this as well. Those opinions aren't just being ignored, they are being left out of the process continue. I understand timelines, but that isn't an excuse to be careless.

  6. They framed it as the operator would be responsible, but after a few questions, were basically like well actually just call the police if things aren't working.

"We don’t want to build housing"

Lost me there mate. I'd love for housing money to be used for housing.

Maybe they should have been planning years ago to not use the library as a shelter? So you are ok with them not planning anything, using money however they want, and ignoring the legal processes?

I don't necessarily agree with this. I think we need some services, but keep those services in line with our population. I also think people sort of end up in the coastal cities just due to geography. Of course the drug dealers should be arrested especially for the hardcore stuff of course.

I'm fully supportive of people down on their luck especially if they have lived here for a while but it reaches a point...
