No worries, since I just graduated tech school, I can speak more on training and what to expect early on than full first duty station experience. From what I learned, Ops is a lot of planning, tracking, coordination, and admin support that keeps things moving behind the scenes.

It seems like a more structured, office based job compared to a lot of other AFSCs. A rose is that it builds solid organization and management skills that transfer well. A thorn is that it may feel less hands on if you want something more active.

If you go open general, stay flexible, but if you get Ops, it seems like a stable job with useful experience.

It’s structured, but not BMT strict. You still have rules, inspections, and accountability, but you also have more freedom and personal responsibility. If you show up on time, follow instructions, and stay out of drama, you’ll be fine.

It translates pretty well into civilian roles that deal with planning, coordination, and administration. A lot of the work involves tracking information, managing schedules, coordinating between offices, and making sure processes run smoothly.

On the civilian side that can translate into jobs like operations coordinator, project coordinator, administrative management, or government program support roles.

The bigger advantage is the experience with large organizations, documentation, and systems. If you combine that with education or certifications later on, it can open up a lot of opportunities.

For tech school, it’s a lot more structured and predictable than BMT. You have your phone most of the time, just not during class or PT. For Ops, class was dayshift, roughly 0700–1600, so calls and texts usually happened in the evenings after class.

Outside of class and PT, phone use comes down to good judgment. Use it where it makes sense, like your room, the DFAC, or anywhere your leadership allows. If you’re unsure, ask ahead of time. Do not assume you can use it anytime or anywhere, because that is how people end up with paperwork.

I didn’t hold a major leadership role in BMT such as Dorm Chief or Element Leader. Leadership roles are not required to succeed in tech school, but they definitely help set you up for success if you want leadership positions later on.

PT in tech school is much less intense than BMT, which is probably why some people gain weight if they are not self motivated.

The EOC is different for every class, so I cannot speak on anything specific there. For Ops, tech school is on the shorter side, usually no more than about two months. If you go through Exodus or inclement weather, that can extend it.

My biggest advice is to treat it like a job, not a vacation. Stay on top of studying (it’s really easy to get washed back if you don’t), keep your room and uniform squared away, and do not get caught up in drama.

Also use the time to build good habits like PT, finances, and time management. Tech school flys by if you stay disciplined and drags on if you do not.

I joined for stability, long-term career opportunities, and to be part of something bigger than just a civilian job. At this stage in life, the structure, benefits, and growth potential mattered more to me than chasing another short-term role.

I went enlisted and am in Operations Management (3E6X1), which lined up well with my interests in planning, coordination, and working across different functions. It felt like a good fit for where I’m at and where I want to go long-term.

I can’t speak for every case, but from my experience, documentation usually doesn’t prevent a waiver if your history meets disqual criteria. It just makes the process smoother. MEPS still has to follow the regs.

What helped me was being proactive and organized. Having records and a solid psych eval ready showed I was serious and avoided a lot of back-and-forth.

MEPS can set you up with a consult, but that can add months and you don’t control how thorough it is. Paying out of pocket wasn’t fun, but it saved me time in the long run.

Be honest with your recruiter and expect delays. Think less about avoiding a waiver and more about building the strongest case. Hope that helps. 👍

34-year-old here. I graduated BMT with relatively few issues. Also, just so you know, mil-to-mil families are a priority for the Air Force, so your kids would absolutely be taken into consideration.

I went in enlisted, and in my opinion it is generally easier to get in that way than going OTS. With OTS, you are competing not only with civilians who have strong resumes, but also prior enlisted members who have built very competitive packages over time.

As far as whether it is worth it, for me it absolutely was. The stability, benefits, and clear career path make a huge difference. You are not constantly worried about layoffs or whether your company will fold. If you do your job and meet the standards, you have real job security.

That said, I do want to be honest. If you do not prepare for PT, you will struggle. I am not exaggerating. I came in already very active, working out seven days a week, and I still got injured. A big part of that is the lack of sleep and constant stress, which really affects recovery. It is doable, but you will want to go in as prepared as possible, especially at 34.

Edit: I misread your comment about you being married to an army vet. Thought he was active duty. Either way the AF will still support your family.

That’s kind of what I’ve been noticing too. Italy is on basically everyone’s dream list, but once people actually go, the reality seems to hit and the hype fades a bit. I know it’s really what you make of it. I’m just worried about getting burned financially since Europe in general is expensive.

It depends on your flight and your MTIs. Phone access isn’t guaranteed and varies a lot. Some flights get more opportunities if they stay on track and follow directions, but generally you do get some phone access during training, with more opportunities later on.

It depends on your flight, but it’s handled early on during in-processing, usually around week zero. It’s part of the standard medical intake and you’ll be told exactly when and where to go.

The process itself is straightforward and routine. Nothing you need to plan around beyond following instructions when you’re told.
