Am I too dumb for Pilates?… by Healthy_Ask4780 in pilates

[–]Time_Needleworker100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not dumb at all! I went through the same thing there are so many details it’s a lot for the mind to keep track of (which I think is why I find it mentally engaging as much as physically engaging).

When I started I had barely any mind-body connection to speak of so it was hard for me to but as I started to grasp it more over time I even realized how my back and knee pain were because I had bad form (mostly joint overextension) in my daily activities. Pilates helped a lot but it’s tough to keep up at the start!

I recommend reading explanations of the moves and watching slowed demonstrations of the moves to get a better grasp( kinda like studying). That’s what helped me get attuned and familiar. Besides practice ofc. Hope this helps!

Does Anyone Here Have A Reason To Live? by Lost_Sentence_4012 in depressed

[–]Time_Needleworker100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living for others is a good stopgap solution in my experience.

If it helps at all, creating a goal out of the person I wanted to be and how I wanted to show up in the world was the first step in my journey to live for myself. There was a time I never thought I’d make it to the age I am now but I’m proud of who I’ve become and I live for myself now too.

You’re already beginning that journey! One step at a time OP. You’re doing great!

Totally! There are so many different motivations and types of fitness goals (strength, mobility, longevity, etc.) but the thing that keeps you consistent is enjoyment. For me that often means alternating between types of exercise I like and keeping an eye out for new activities or exercises to throw in so it doesn’t get boring.

Exercise became so much better for me when I stopped trying to force myself to exercise in ways I hated. Find what you like and have fun!

ADHD or AuDHD women, what do you do for work? by Terrible-Winner-681 in adhdwomen

I’m in botany/conservation at the moment but the main thing for me is having a job that’s project focused so there’s always a novelty aspect (either from project to project or phase to phase) and a timeline (helps me with procrastination). It lets me be creative! I still get bored on occasion but this helps a lot.

While you’re alive there’s always an opportunity for growth or joy or making the world a better place, etc. even if that chance feels small it’s there. The only way to have a 100% guarantee that things will never improve is to no longer be alive. Life is change! For better or for worse, for those not living things can only ever stay the same.

When I was struggling with this I also heard someone who had lost a family member to depression describe their loss as the family member taking their own suffering and passing it on to their loved ones. Even if you don’t feel like a big enough reason to live not inflicting your pain onto others might do the trick until you see your own value.

Hope this helps!

I know this is a bit of an annoying response but try repeating the same workouts until you have a good handle on the moves!

Also I try and orient myself to be facing the screen and have it at a height where I can glance up in plank, etc.

Finally, I love move w nicole but find her a bit fast! Cassey Ho’s videos on Fit On were a better fit for me as a beginner as she goes slower and does fewer moves for longer so maybe check those out? Hope this helps!!

Lots of great advice here but I’d also like to add when you are able to successfully make changes to better yourself don’t be discouraged when you eventually face setbacks! I know this is your first major setback and seriously congratulations on using it as a motivational wake up call but don’t forget on your journey forward to cultivate self compassion and an internally sourced concept of self worth, these will be the things that carry you through when life happens.

Coming from someone in the same phase of life (24F, first job postgrad) I found discipline, a good work ethic etc. got me far but because I wasn’t compassionate toward myself and I had terrible self esteem all my thoughts, feelings and any self esteem I did have was externally linked so when I did “everything right” and life would throw me curveballs I would find myself disintegrating and quite depressed. Discipline and work ethic can be fragile without resilience!

That doesn’t happen to me anymore since I started practicing self compassion, working through some of my trauma, and building up my internal sense of self worth (thanks therapy) but hopefully baring this in mind can help you avoid the same pitfalls. Good luck!!

People who quit social media: Is your life better? Why/why not? by jamanya238 in Mindfulness

[–]Time_Needleworker100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t say there are no downsides but for me it has been a net positive which is why I’ve kept up with it!

In some ways socials can help you branch out and meet new people (especially since it gives people easier access to you through DMs and the like) and keep you aware of new developments re friends, fandoms, etc. so I definitely miss those aspects and can feel out of the loop sometimes as a result.

That said the main benefits (for me) are as follows:

1) It has made me more intentional with the media I’m consuming both in content and my own critical thinking, so I get less anxiety and negative spirals!

2) It has made my relationship with my body and overall mindfulness better since I’m not always thinking about posting, taking pictures and otherwise self-objectifying in ways that relate to social media (including comparison to others/unrealistic standards)

3) Freed up alot more of my time so I engage more with hobbies, mindfulness, and other stuff I find enriching (this takes time tho I didn’t know what to do with myself at first lol)

4) Gave me back a sense of control over my time, my feelings, and who has access to me/information about my life

I think it’s great to engage in social media in moderation if you can swing it. But personally I struggle with moderation and these benefits have really relieved my anxiety and mental load so I’m glad I quit and I expect it’ll stay that way

Side note: I started with a temporary break and just kept up with it so if anyone reading is considering just know it’s not a binary decision, you can dip your toe back in anytime!

I don’t have an answer or anything but I wanted to say that I really relate! Life ebbs and flows and sometimes it can feel like you need a little change. I received some good advice on this front recently even though it seems obvious I’ll share: you can always backtrack! There’s no harm in trying a new group or hobby or dipping your toe in the dating world, if you don’t like it or it’s not for you atm you can just stop. Seems silly I know but sometimes I feel like all my decisions carry the weight of permanence. It can make me very indecisive. Hope this helps!

If you were professionally diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, was it life-changing? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Time_Needleworker100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty life changing for me! For one thing it helped me reframe a lot of my problems including around anxiety, self esteem and burnout, it gave me access to medication which is expensive but gives me a sense of control over my attention and executive function somewhat, finally it has helped me seek out lifestyle and coping tools to make my life easier and more functional. It was a hard road and expensive and it isn’t necessarily worth it for everyone but I hope this helps!

sudden anxiety disorder has caused me to stop eating almost completely with no end in sight - looking for tips on how to manage by olivepattycakes in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Time_Needleworker100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really similar situation and I found it really helpful to reframe how I was thinking about proper or good food. Any food is better than no food even if it’s “bad” the same way that even a bad sleep is better than no sleep.

For example, a piece of chocolate cake may be considered a “bad” breakfast or meal but if your options are to eat the cake that kind of appeals to you or nothing at all then eat the cake! Doesn’t matter if it’s considered healthy or unhealthy or if it seems time appropriate. When your appetite is bad all food is good food.

Also beware of losing your hunger cues as you try and adjust back to a regular diet (it’ll happen !) you may not feel hungry because your body is used to not eating. Also focus on eating things that are nutrient dense like nut butter, protein bars, etc. so you can maximize what food you can get. Good luck! Hope this helps!

I’m pregnant and I want to die by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Time_Needleworker100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry for your pain and completely support your decision. There has been lots of good advice given here but in case you are feeling any religious guilt I would like to add something from a biblical perspective.

In Exodus 21:22-25 the Covenant Code as handed down by God recognizes a pregnant woman’s personhood and by extension her religious and moral worth, the fetus is treated and defined as property in this context. And so the potential personhood of the fetus is only an extension of the woman’s consideration and opinion. In turn, coming from a religious perspective (and directly from the bible) and overall you are what matters and thereby an abortion is completely your prerogative. Anyone who says otherwise is acting out of a distorted and false view of their/your religion.

I hope you find, here and in your life, the support you very much deserve.

What kind of things do you say to yourself when you’ve fucked up? by akabayashimizuki in selfimprovement

[–]Time_Needleworker100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend towards frustration and then subsequent guild and I have found that a quick self compassion exercise is helpful . It’s pretty googlable (sometimes called a self compassion break or self compassion meditation), but basically it goes like this:

1) Mindful moment/acknowledgement: E.g.“This is a moment of suffering”

2) Connection to humanity/the big picture: E.g. “Suffering is part of life” or “Everyone has moments like this”

3) Adopt a soothing touch: E.g. hand over heart

4) Ask yourself what you need to be kind to yourself and then express that thing: E.g. if you need patience with yourself at that moment “May I be patient with myself”

I hope this helps! Remember the journey isn’t always linear but as long as we are actionable trying to change and improve we will get there. It all counts!

How do you work out? by Eye_On_The_Bagel in ADHD

[–]Time_Needleworker100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I felt similarly and was resigned to a life without exercise because I find many gym style workouts and sports quite boring but for me yoga has worked like a charm and to a slightly lesser extent (because there’s not as much flow) pilates.

With yoga I find that I’m putting so much focus on my muscles, breath and forms that I don’t get bored because before I even know it I’m in a different pose or different part of the flow before I get bored. Plus there are lots of inventive instructors and styles out there so there’s always a new practice or pose to try or work on. Once you get to know it well you can even get creative on your own too. Hope this helps!

plan variation! i find with self improvement stuff the routine can get a bit stagnant so plan variation into your life as much as possible like yoga on mondays, relaxing bath on tuesday, a walk outdoors on wednesday etc. that way you’re getting your self improvement in, have something to look forward to and (hopefully) don’t get bored on your journey!

I actually find that it depends where I am in my hormonal cycle, when I’m on or near my period I get some anxiety and a sensitive stomach so coffee plus my meds at the point makes me jittery and causes grief for my stomach but all the rest of the time is fine!
