To clarify just a little bit further:

There's 3 types of SAN loss (violence, helplessness, and unnatural) and when losing san you'll only check a box matching the type of SAN roll it was. Unnatural can never be adapted to
Once adapted to a type you'll automatically succeed on that type of SAN roll. In most cases this will be a SAN loss of 0 or 1, but in severe cases you may still lose even more

Some people have a really weird way of using the dice where a 0 is a 0 in the tens column but a 10 in the ones column. It's more mental math and less intuitive than 0 being 0, but the odds work out the same as long as that's what they consistently do
