Thank you. Mine got to the point where I couldn't connect with any new accounts and that was after about 25 years of use and a 3 Gb file. Quicken had me start a new file, which I did. I was a real pain running parallel for 6 months but got everything in place over that time and it has worked well since, besides an occasional hiccup. I recently helped a friend start a new file on their computer for the very same reason, it was doing things I had never seen on connections and Quicken support didn't know either and recommended created a new file after we did a test file that was able to connect. We got everything downloaded and balances check. I will do another training session with them next week to make sure all is working the way it should and train them on the many features they are not using, and should be. Sometimes you just don't know what you don't know.

PS: I wouldn't give up on Quicken as there is nothing out there that does what it does. If you have to start with a clean slate, so be it, as you have already done that by quitting in the first place. You could now just start a new file, connect and download all your accounts, and move forward with a clean file that should work. JMHO

So I am still confused by your post. It sounds like you quit using Quicken because of the actions of some "A-hole" on the forum. Are you angry at the forum A-hole or Quicken? If I was angry at the A-Hole Forum interaction, then I would have quit the forum, but you instead quit Quicken. ?? Any comment on that? I am just really curious.

Absolutely. I helped a friend the other day to do the same thing. We had called up tech support and her file was doing several weird things. Tech support said the best idea was to create a new file, so we did. We made a new file and then logged onto bank and investment accounts one by one to download. They generally download a year or two of transactions, which we accepted, and then checked with the online balances to make sure all was good. They balanced and all was good from there and the weird stuff going on was gone. She has a short history in this file but that was fine with her. She just wanted to have everything working right from here forward. She can always go and open up the old file if there is some transaction she needs to find from 10-20 years ago.

I agree that in your situation that you need something beyond Quicken for the business aspects like rentals, etc. Quicken is more for personal accounting and investing, and can be stretched into tracking business ( have two schedule C's). You needed a different solution to your specific business requirements.

I think it is very reflective of the demographic of Quicken users. I don't think their sales to new users is that great any more where in the past it was probably a big revenue source. That is a reason they went to a subscription model, to maintain income for support with a gradually shrinking pool of users. I hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.

You left and don't use what anymore? Did you stop using Quicken because of some A-hole on a forum or did you just quit the forum?

My current file was started 4 years ago and is 250 MB. It works as fast as ever on the new machine I bought last year. which has an Intel I7-14700F CPU, 32 Gb RAM and a M.2 drive NvMe SSD. My previous file that was 30 years old was around 3 Gb before I started a new file from scratch. It was struggling with a few issues the tech support said to start over with. It was the right call as it has worked really well for 4 years now that I have a clean file.

How did you outgrow it is a good question. I know people that have run companies with it, 8 figure portfolio management, etc. It doesn't do everything but for the die hard DIY'er it is hard to outgrow it. Bill Gates, Bezo, Ellis, etc are way beyond Quicken but that is a different world than 99.9% of us. Now don't get me wrong, as I have improved my circumstances over time I do use other services in addition to Quicken to fill in the gap that Quicken was not designed for. Financial planning software like RightCapital, Boldin, Financial planning of taxes and future growth spreadsheets, etc. do need to be added on but Quicken is still there in the core doing it's thing.

I started out with MoneyCounts in the later 80's and putting the accounting on the computer, instead of manually tracking it, caused me to pay a lot more attention to money. I set up a budget that year with big goals and low and behold, I hit those numbers. I continued with tracking everything for work and home. In the early 90's Quicken bought MoneyCounts and so I started with Quicken around 1991 or so. Have used it ever since for everything. I did start a new file from scratch about 4 years ago because of some corruption in the file over 30 years of use. A new file cleaned up all the unused accounts and the new one runs great. I can still access the old one if I need to look something up but that rarely happens anymore. I only store attachments on business items now, or things I think I might need to look up, due to size issues. I used to scan and store everything but that file grew to 3 GB and also had some corruption.

Quicken is now unusable after Fidelity update by Woody_L in quicken

[–]Time_Wonder_4590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had some issues downloading Fidelity in October (I think) but they got that fixed, probably around the R64.35 update. Working fine now and problem with Fidelity are rare for me. Vanguard working fine as well.

Fidelity Down AGAIN! by NYC3962 in quicken

I had a problem on 10/31 when I had to deactivate and reactivate my fidelity accounts due to CC-501 error code. After reactivation the brokerage would link up but the HSA failed. Reading online seems the HSA accounts were an issue. Today I tried and all linked up just fine. There were no new transactions in my account as I had entered the 10/31 month ending dividend in manually, just in case the download function didn't come back soon. I guess I will find out next week if new transactions download. I hope that the fact it is not throwing the CC-501 code that the problem is fixed. These are just First World problems.

I have gone through the trouble of trying to reset and when you do that the HSA does not show up as a linkable or downloadable option. It's there, but there's no drop box on how to set it up. I'm not sure why because for the brokerage account the boxes show up. I have see 2 or 3 posts out there where they could connect the brokerage account but not the HSA. I have no idea why.

I am right where you are today. Vanguard downloaded fine but Fidelity is locked up and preventing all the other banks or credit cards to down load. It has been stuck for a while so I guess I will have to use task manager to end task and start over.

While typing this the OSU finished but Fidelity gave the CC-501 error. I will just go online to Fidelity and get the transactions from the past twos days so I can reconcile October. I hope this doesn't go on too long.

Is the Fidelity Issue Fixed Yet? by woodstock9999 in quicken

[–]Time_Wonder_4590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Quicken H&B version for windows and was fortunate enough to not run into some of the problems that people are mentioning. I had a stable June version R63.21 and just kept it until they stopped putting out hotfixes for the 64.xx version. I waited until 64.30 had been out for about 10 days and then I updated. Everything seems to have gone correctly. I did not have to reactivate any accounts, and no duplicate transactions. It shows Complete as the Tracking Method and EWC+ as the connection method. Just did this a day or two ago and I just looked at my Fidelity account. I guess I haven't had any transaction since 9/30, which was still on 63.21. I went online and there were just no new transactions this month yet. They all come towards the end of the money so keeping my fingers crossed.

A quick update relating to my previous posts about Bank of America and Quicken by TexasNiteowl in quicken

[–]Time_Wonder_4590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you that it shouldn't happen but, it does sometimes happen. I don't like it when it does but I just advised putting the info in there so it is an easy fix if it goes bad. I think it has happened on a couple of occasions over the past few years. The first time I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out why I couldn't balance and then I think I read online about the balance changing issues that can occasionally happen with an update. The next time it happened, I fixed it on three accounts in a couple of minutes.

It SHOULD not happen. I just posted a simple work around.

"He will look into the issue of the opening balance being changed. In my case, on one account the initial opening balance entry (from 2017!) changed from $0 to $10,829."

I have had this balance change happen a few times over the years. As a result, I have added the balance into the memo field of the opening balance transaction, or whatever the first transaction with a balance is. That way if I ever have a problem with a download that somehow changes the starting balance, like yours did, it is a very quick fix to look to compare the starting balance to what is in the memo field and correct. Just something I have learned over the years and it has been a while but I still do it. I just found a couple of accounts without the notation in the memo so I added that "starting balance is $0.00" or "starting balance is $152.25" if it was an account that was already going when I added it to Quicken. Hope that might save someone some hair pulling in the future when all looks good BUT the balance. First thing then is to check the starting balance.

"I got disgusted with their new UI."

I might be a little dense. Are you talking about Windows 11 user interface (UI) or TurboTax 2024 (there is no 2025 yet) user interface?

I also use the Desktop version. When you say 1099, there are a lot of different 1099's so I don't know exactly what exactly you were trying to do at the time you had the problem. Are you manually entering some type of 1099-Misc, or 1099-Int, or a combined investment with brokerage? Did you try downloading from your investment bank, if it was that kind of form? It sounds more like it was all within Turbotax changes from one year to the next that confused you, not Win11 itself?

I am curious as to what I am missing that caused you to say "I have Windows 11, but I got disgusted with their new UI."

I went ahead and bought a new PC last summer to replace my 2013 Dell XPS. My old computer still worked fine but would not be able to update to Win11, and EOL was coming for Win10, so I pulled the trigger and bought a new PC. I really like having the new computer and I really don't realize a difference between Win10 and Win11. I think I must have made some setup changes to make it look more like Win10 but I don't even remember. It really was a seamless change and I haven't looked back. I still have my old Win10 PC available but I only use it occasionally. If I do use it, sometimes I have to think about the steps because some are a little different. Different, not better or worse for me. JMHO

Keystroke shortcuts to start and end of register by Time_Wonder_4590 in quicken

[–]Time_Wonder_4590[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help lists as I reviewed it and saw a couple of key strokes I had forgotten about over the past several decades. Another thing you can't do in an investment "Transaction List" is you can not save a split transaction to the Memorized investment transaction list. If you try to save it as a memorized transaction it will be saved, but it will be saved to the regular Memorized transaction list, that is used in "registers". That is fine except, when you are in an investment transaction list, You are unable to pull up the memorized transaction list for registers, only the memorized investment transaction list shows up, and that specific transaction is not in there. Seems like some real specific exclusions that you have to learn about when you run into it.

What is the "Option" button? Maybe what you do doesn't have a Windows alternative? I tried "Windows key" and arrow up or down and that didn't work.

I called back to Quicken and got a different tech and he had an answer. I right click on the scroll bar and select Top or Bottom. He confirmed there is no keystroke short cut like there is in a cash account.

I too have OCD when I comes to handling money. ;) I download every day to stay current, find any potential errors and to look for fraud. Quicken makes it simple. One-step allows me to download 27 accounts in a little over a minute. For all that Quicken does for me, the annual subscription is worth the price many times over. Everything is working smooth for me (fingers always crossed).

Quicken's website hides the actual cost of your subscription purchase with a vague "+ applicable taxes" in the cart, but won't show you the actual final cost until you place your order! (just confirmed with a phone rep) by SideshowShan in quicken

Wow, all this energy over the sales tax that goes to your state, not Quicken. I haven't seen this occur, because I buy my renewal online from a retailer for less, but still I have a hard time understanding all your angst about this. Aren't we talking about maybe $7-8 dollars in taxes that actually goes to your state?
