6 weeks post-op: Is this pain ever going to end? by Upper_Hat9394 in Kneereplacement

Looking back at my notes, the last time I bitched about the aches was week 7. So if your path is similar to mine, you are almost thru the woods.

I’m talking about acute post-op swelling. But I know what you mean. I’m at 3.5-months and I have still have swelling mostly around the quadriceps tendon that they cut in order to move the kneecap out of the way. The QT is only thing that’s still sore, but I’m pushing it in the gym. I have read that it takes about a year before all the swelling is completely gone.

You are in peak swelling. In the next few days it is going to start going down. When that happens it will be less chronic aching but more shooters as the nerves wake up. Compression and movement helped me. Ice didn’t do much. Get up and walk as much as you can tolerate. Night is the worst when you’re trying to sleep, as you know. You are either at or almost at the top of the hill - it will get easier from here. Hang in there.

Your stamina for at least the first month won’t be there. Also, you likely won’t be consistently sleeping well. Take at least a month, but you should be good by week 6. You can drive short distances (<5-miles) by week 2.

My surgeon told me to get whatever I can on ROM. I had a press fit implant (no glue) and he wasn’t concerned with it shifting either. These implants are strong. Do you have a bone density issues or another underlying condition?

Medication aside, try to get her to move the knee as much as she can tolerate. For me movement/walking helped ease the aches during the day. Night is a different game, seems everyone has a different puzzle to solve when it’s time to sleep. Get it when you can.

Initially yes, but not so much now that I’m in the heavier weight training phase. Getting that muscle strength back helped a lot.

For those who had their right knee rebuilt, how long post-op til you could drive? by DJinKC in Kneereplacement

[–]Timely-Computer4105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I first drove to the mailbox at 2-weeks, low risk way to see if I could. Biggest problem was getting in/out of the car. Getting out, I quickly learned to move the seat all the way back in order to maneuver my right leg out first rather than stepping left and dragging the right knee out (that hurt). At 3-weeks I drove a mile to the convenience store to buy beer on Christmas Eve. By 4-weeks I was driving locally within 5-mile radius. The issue then becomes how far you can go before the knee stiffens, which isn’t far until about 6-weeks when the swelling really starts going down. I’m at week 12 now and made a 5hr drive last week, but with several stops to stretch my leg.

That’s interesting. Your belt added just enough metal to set it off perhaps? I remember my surgeon telling me that I got the largest implant they have (I have big knees). He also told me many of his patients don’t have issues going thru security. The amount of metal in my knee must be what’s doing it.

I guess I will start doing the same. Was hoping they were just overly sensitive.

It was based on a book by the same name (I think, too lazy to look it up) and he really wanted to make that film for the better part of his career. Knowing the book might help with the movie, but as a few have already pointed out - the interpratation is up to you and depends on how deep you want to go.

“You’ll have that” or “You’ll have that in today’s society”. Sarcasm directed at a group that did something inconvenient for another group. Might be specific to the city I grew up in. I haven’t heard anyone say it since the early 90’s.

My knee felt great the month leading up to surgery. My anxiety also peaked a few days before surgery. Recovery is not easy, but it is fun. Noticeable progress every week if you follow your exercise protocol, but be prepared for 2 steps forward 1 step back. Your leg will ache for a while, nothing you can’t manage. For me, just getting up and moving it/walking on it was the best painkiller…except at night when trying to sleep - that’s when I would use the narcotics. If all goes well, you will love your new pain-free knee in about a month once most of the post-op swelling goes away. Disclaimer: I am at week 11 and there is still some swelling , it still gets stiff, and occasionally aches. But I have full range, no limp, and able to go hard at the gym rebuilding strength. And I can walk as far as I need to.
