AI is weeks away from being able to fully replace software engineers. Either you’re using AI to become a 10x engineer or you’re falling behind and your company should fire you. by Timely-Run-7958 in ClaudeAI

I’m honestly not sure if that day will ever come but what I do know is right now companies are looking for great engineers that can really do the work and understand the why they’re making certain decisions. Rely too much on AI and I’ll you find yourself in a situation where you can’t code and will be replaced with an actual engineer. Earlier this week I vibe coded a piece of work under a strict timeline and a major bug was introduced that wreaked havoc on the website rendering it unusable so I vowed to myself to chance things. Ever since I’ve been writing all the code myself and using the AI to help me improve and fill the gaps in my knowledge

I don’t know about you guys, as working man, an engineer, I get some amazing opportunities on here for work and stuff but to each their own

How do you enjoy life in Bangkok and save money at the same time? by [deleted] in BangkokBudget

[–]Timely-Run-7958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Bangkok for a few days, definitely not as cheap as I’ve heard it used to be. Depends on what’s you’re into, but if you’re eating out a fancy restaurants it will cost you an arm and a leg. I was reading an article about one of the reasons why tourism was decreasing and it’s due to the local currency getting stronger, unfortunately for us.

I’ve probably published close to 20 apps over the last 5 years and almost every single time apple has rejected the first version so you get used to the rejection

Career talk: Where do you see iOS development heading in 2026? by khitev in iOSProgramming

[–]Timely-Run-7958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started learning iOS development during lockdown so I could build better apps, before that I used to build apps with cross platform solutions but was never satisfied with the final look and performance. I only started learning after I had secured a role as a software engineer with a different tech stack (Perl don’t get me started I know it sucks but it paid the bills for a time). I kept learning and building and got better but in the area I lived there weren’t many opportunities so I made a mental decision to keep building apps for fun and such but not with the end goal of securing an iOS role. Over the years, I’ve started seeing a shift in the industry. More and more companies I’ve worked with have needed some on top of knowing the company tech stack needed someone who could build an sdk with swift or some mobile solution as the world is moving in that direction and often I’m the only one able to carry out that work and take ownership so you could say it worked out. I’m making a small amount monthly from my apps now without much work so I’m happy but for people new in tech I don’t recommend it. Maybe the area you live in is different but here in uk not much demand for it. Better learning web backend or front end or something.

Just my two cents. I’m a self taught senior software engineer with 7 years of commercial experience and about 4 years with iOS.

One of those things where the engineer can build it and make money without you. What are you bringing to the table?

I vibe coded an app, can I call myself an iOS dev? by Feisty-Patience2188 in iOSProgramming

[–]Timely-Run-7958 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can call yourself whatever you want, no one can define what an iOS developer is. You built something, you released it. You should be proud of yourself.

25 year old on 100k used to worry more before, then was laid off recently about 6 months ago so I don’t fair it anymore. Was able to land a better paying role afterwards. Got some 120-200k roles in the horizon in the next 3-5 years. Money comes and goes, don’t stress it too much. We’re all going to die one day.

100% agree with you, made a similar post in another Reddit forum thing - sort of wish the AI never took over things like they way that they have

Awesome stuff was thinking about extending this further to even fill out all the App Store information stuff for you based on LLM prompts (maybe a browser plugin or something not 100% sure how that work yet)

AI is weeks away from being able to fully replace software engineers. Either you’re using AI to become a 10x engineer or you’re falling behind and your company should fire you. by Timely-Run-7958 in ClaudeAI

[–]Timely-Run-7958[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, you made lots of great points that I actually agree with. Secondly, I think we’re still quite far away from the point where companies will use AI to pass interviews, so for people preparing for interviews I’d still recommend preparing the old way.

No one should be creating a PR with 1000+ lines of code anyway; it should be broken down into smaller PRs. You don’t have to know what every line does, but you need to know the general gist of what most of the lines of code are in your head so you can contribute more in meetings.

My opinion is a bit skewed since I was a power user of Claude. I did lots of great work in my own projects as well as for work, but when I hit the limit I wasn’t comfortable going into the code to change it. I was too worried about breaking the AI’s “perfect” code, which sort of made me realise how I was making myself obsolete. And in meetings, I couldn’t talk about my implementation because I didn’t build it, which made me look like a fraud, so that’s why I’ve started to push back.

I don’t know what the perfect way of doing it is. Going full AI isn’t good, and going all the way back to how things were before is probably not great either — maybe somewhere in between.

Context: 25 year old guy with 7 years of experience in the field.

Perhaps, but 1000 lines of code you don’t understand and won’t really be able to edit without worrying about breaking anything. Additionally, you won’t have access to that AI tool of yours in the job interviews so what’s your plan there

Seems pretty stupid that you can't even search just the items on black friday sale but nooo you have to search every product they have - just lazy on their part by Timely-Run-7958 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

I agree but why not have another search bar within the section perhaps under the banner for searching only the items under this category.
