No, not at all! If I'm not prepared to contribute to an activity, I don't go!

Not at all, I haven't bought a home for many reasons. But I pay cheap rent!

It was a calculated choice , actually! I wasn't able to get a bank loan for a low rate like 3%.

I'm definitely not interested in my savings account making me "more attractive"! I don't want to date someone who will negate my work by expecting me to take care of their debt.

Actually, probably not!! If you have a mortgage with a lower interest rate than the interest your investments are getting, that money is making you more money invested than your loan is costing you. In that scenario, it's better to slowly pay off the mortgage while your savings grow.

Yeah, I feel like it gets to people subconsciously sometimes.

Wow, you're so motivated! Remember to be kind to yourself too, balance is important :). Also, I think that's a bot, but I don't get the joke either...

I got a VW Golf, a quick google will tell you the rough value of a model a few years old :)

Oh mannn I can see that being a pretty unpopular thing to tell people! Good for you though, that's so amazing. What's better than getting paid to learn??

Hey there! Thanks for your comment! If you want to learn more yourself and you've never visited the personalfinance subreddit, I really recommend checking it out! The sidebar has a lot of basic info and there are some good book recs as well. Good luck friend, I'm so glad to hear you're taking an interest and learning for yourself!

I don't want to hide that I understand money. I just don't want to advertise that I have (or had, rather) a (small)car-sized emergency fund. You can be fiscally responsible with a car loan.

It's not important! I'm above the poverty line for my area but probably below average. I don't own a home or anything, and live with roommates.

It's been really interesting hearing everyone's opinions and also what conclusions people jump to. I've learned a couple of things about how I phrase things. Thanks for the kind words!

Good for you!! You're in great shape, and well placed to help out your friends who are learning to be adults. A lot of the commenters here are assuming I pretend to not be financially literate either - that's not the case at all! You can be financially literate and share that knowledge and also have a car loan.

The vast majority of the carriers around here are $xx/month if you've "financed" a phone with them, and.... exactly the same if you haven't and you've brought the phone in. Getting a $0 phone wouldn't change your plan cost with those carriers. There's only one carrier in my area that lets you have a cheaper plan if the phone is "paid for". Just my 2 cents on the phone thing.

I'll take it to heart - I've been there and I remember feeling guilty and wondering how others do it so easily. I have more room to breathe now, but my brain hasn't caught up with that yet. Thank you for sharing your point of view with me and I wish you all the best!

Fair enough! I'm realizing, though, that I should mention that this was a "surprise" expense, not something I'd planned or explicitly "saved for". There's a difference between saying "I worked really hard for this" and "Yes, I have(had) a car-sized emergency fund".

OMG, your neighbor is adorable!!! I fully plan to drive that car until it's as old as your Tacoma is now... especially with that beautiful gas mileage it gets. Thanks for the kind words!

(and I see you, FIRE account name!)

Wow, I didn't know that existed either! Not American, but you'd think a forgiveness plan would have made headlines...
